About this deal

A warm, unsentimental and beautifully-observed book for our times' Lucy Caldwell, author of These Days 'If I were in bother I'd want the Ballybrady bunch at my back. He has come to try to process his grief and make himself desirable again as a husband, a father and a business partner. Since 2019, Dark Horse Comics publishes larger, hardcover "deluxe" volumes, each of which collects three of the regular volumes. Guts is a severely traumatized vagabond that wanders the world, throwing himself into one battle after another in hopes of finding a meaning in the tremendous suffering he's endured.

The lead characters Guts and Griffith consistently challenge these themes and definitions through their shocking yet horrifyingly human actions. Miura inspired me as well and I regard him for being the person who taught me just how influential, meaningful and life changing art and literature can be when I first read his series over a decade ago. As Rickert bares witness to the Skull Knight and Zodd battling outside the storm entrance to the Interstice, the Band of the Hawk are decimated by the Apostles with only Guts and Casca left alive. The definitions of good an evil are blurred beyond recognition, the heroes are just as flawed and capable of terrible deeds as the villains.Everything in between is pretty much a rollercoaster whirl of violence, rude bits, philosophical waffle and some of the darkest themes ever to (dis)grace the media and not get banned. Delirious and horrified at what he has been reduced to, Griffith takes off in a wagon and crashes into a shallow lake where he fails to commit suicide. The fantasy is visualised at a standard far above what most comic artists and companies are willing to attempt. Raised by his adoptive father and mentor Gambino, the young Guts was forced to kill Gambino when the man attempted to murder him in misplaced blame for his wife's death for saving his life when born from his hanged mother. Though Guts manages to kill Mozgus's disciples, the possessed blood causes the tower to partially collapse.

Not only benefitting for the reasons above, but also because monsters are very slowly and gradually placed into the world of humans and the ape monster being seen by humans lessens the shock of what follows after. Although the animated series looked like it was done on a tiny budget and tight deadline (lots of shortcuts taken), considering that, it did an admirable job of telling the story (I think the recent animated films were too much like a summary and didn't get the power of the gradual changes in story) and the soundtrack by Susumu Hirasawa was very powerful and evocative.Berserk has taken over my life, its one of the best written stories ive ever had the pleasure of reading/watching. Guts, the feared Black Swordsman, has saved the Band of the Hawk mercenaries from the army of Midland, but he must now descend into the dungeons of Windham Castle to liberate the Hawks' charismatic leader.

I was surprised yo find out there was content before the "golden age" arc of the series but already am sure I'll love it. Created by Kentaro Miura, Berserk is manga mayhem to the extreme - violent, horrifying, and mercilessly funny - and the wellspring for the internationally popular anime series. But Guts won't take his fate lying down; he'll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned - and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! The landscapes, scenery, architecture, castles, armour, boats, corpses and monsters all look excellent; there are lots of really brilliant images that succeed mightily in grandeur, awe, nasty brutality and grotesque. All of the young characters and many of the female characters don't have their own faces; they have uniform faces to suggest cuteness, so I can't help but feel cheated when many of the faces in the crowds are more distinct than some of the main characters. In Albion, with the surrounding refugee camp in utter disarray from the starved and over-populated masses, Mozgus begins his task in the Tower of Conviction where "sinful" beggars are tortured. Griffith is shown visions of his consciousness by Uvik to be convinced that a few more sacrificed lives are trivial in regard to the fulfillment of his dream. The bedridden Godo tells Guts that he made a grave mistake by abandoning Casca while he tried to drown his sorrow with revenge.
