About this deal

Skirting the supply chain problems that many manufactures are facing right now, Earthworks has designed and manufactured another broadcast mic that splits the difference between these two stunning mics: the ETHOS. The filter design is undoubtedly very similar to the famous Shure SM7b, and one that you’ll find is very effective! If you were to move from something like an SM7B to the ETHOS, I think you’d notice the difference as one of refinement and openness at the top end, rather than a night and day contrast in character. It doesn't overly color the source or embellish it - it feels accurate, but not clinical or sterile.

The ETHOS might have the ability to capture frequencies other mics can’t, then, but it isn’t an obviously bright‑sounding or shrill mic. Its 50 to 20,000Hz frequency range isn't up to par with the Ethos, but you get another fantastic foam widescreen for similar plosive prevention. If a microphone helps me learn about how other mics in my collection sound, then it is worth spending time with it for this reasons alone.Operating with a single thumb screw, the Triad-Orbit attachment spins around to help find the perfect position, with four cutout sections for an even firmer lock. This was pretty much the deciding factor in my decision, since some of these will be shipped out to various people with wildly varying technical abilities. As a team member at Earthworks shared with me, when you record yourself with most other microphones, you’ll sound ever so slightly off to your own ear.

ETHOS is equipped with a windscreen stack that raises the bar for plosive and wind noise protection.Jan · What's crazy to me is that people understand why a Ferrari is more expensive than a Ford, despite serving the exact same function. It's not the easiest hardware to approach for beginners since you can't plug XLR cables directly into your average desktop Windows PC. It's shipped in a cardboard box (a nice one, I’ll add) instead of a crafted wood box or pelican style case and is everything you’d expect from an Earthworks microphone: Beautifully machined metal, solid connectors, and when you unscrew the windscreen, you'll spot a familiar tapered capsule design at the end of the mic. Like many mics that made Earthworks a big name, the ETHOS utilizes a small-diaphragm condenser capsule, which allows it to deliver nuanced and accurate vocal recordings with extended highs. As on that mic, a foam plosive filter forms part of an overall cylindrical shape, and can be removed to leave the capsule housing looking slightly naked.
