About this deal

Nearly 20 years later, White Pony remains one of the most ground-breaking and significant albums in heavy music. Deftones is an American alternative metal band from Sacramento, California, formed in 1988, consisting of Chino Moreno (lead vocals and guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Frank Delgado (keyboards and turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion). is unlike any other nu-metal album of its time, and visually, it's unlike any heavy rock album before or after. I wanted to see it first, but had a hard time getting a good copy, so I had Maverick Records fax it to me. Deftones were one of the first bands to experiment with using heavy guitars and distorted vocals to create a more atmospheric and emotive sound, and Adrenaline is seen as the blueprint for this style of music.

So many nu-metal bands went garish and over the top with their covers — the simplicity of this one makes it such a standout. While many nu-metal album covers play up the fun, quirky elements of the music, Korn's first record visually expresses its most frightening aspects. Their masks are creepy as hell, and the fact that the image is just dark enough that it makes it hard to see details make them look even spookier. In their own ways, each played a part in defining the nu-metal movement, and whether good or bad or so bad they're good, here are 11 of the most unforgettable and iconic.

Co-created with visual artist Frank Maddocks (known for designing many Deftones covers, including White Pony), the band wanted to convey a convergence of militarism (the soldier) and emotionality (the dragonfly wings), and the intentional layering of the image — it looks like the handiwork of numerous graffiti artists — channels the many dualities of the music itself, which pushed and pulled between heavy, catchy, angry and heartfelt. Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter were fans of Kosick's work and decided to fly him up to Seattle, where they were recording Around the Fur, to shoot the album's cover. Though they may have courted controversy in the past, there's no denying that Gore is the sound of a band firing on all cylinders. We weren’t second guessing ourselves and we took our time being as expansive as we could be with those ideas. Pushing the boundary of what is expected or assumed is a hallmark of both the design and the sound of Deftones' records.

Some of Kosick's work was also used for three other Around the Fur–related releases: a photo of a pool table appeared on a promotional cassette (and in the CD liner notes); a photo of a microphone was used for the "My Own Summer" single; and the album cover was turned sideways (and tinted blue) for the "Be Quiet and Drive" single. You can tell exactly what the music is going to sound like just by looking at that image, and once you actually hear frenzied bangers like "Push It" and "I'm With Stupid," there's no better visual representation than a man being zapped in the electric chair. The result is an emotionally charged record that deals with loss and grief in a very raw and honest way. Her name is Lisa Hughes, and 20 years after the album came out, Pousta tracked her down and interviewed her a little bit about the album cover. In a genre that is often mired in conservatism, White Pony is a vital reminder that artistry and experimentation are always worth pursuing. While Chino Moreno's lyrics are often praised for their poetic and esoteric nature, it is the band's unique sound that really set them apart from their contemporaries. The album wasn't originally intended to be released, but after Cheng's accident, the band decided to finish it in his honor.

You can either look at the cover of Crazy Town's debut as lowbrow schlock designed to grab the eye of horny teenagers flipping through the CD rack, or brilliantly eccentric pop art that deserves a place in the Louvre.
