By the time Ellie reaches the same place as the reader, one is completely captivated by the characters in both times. This is a slight dual-perspective book where we start in 1973 with Stella and then flick to the current day, we then spend the majority of the time in the present day with the occasional flick back to the past. It was fitting, real, raw, and optimistic in the promise and hope of the future and for things to come, despite the dark past.Stella’s husband Andy is controlling and violent towards her and some scenes are upsetting, but written very well. I really appreciated the inclusion of a male domestic violence survivor, it's not talked about or written about enough. Cottage One is occupied by a morose single man who seems to spend a lot of time dressed like a tramp and staring, Tamzin can't decide if he's creepy or a bit simple. I love the growing friendships, gentle romance and Euan and Tamzin's emotional recovery facilitated by the cottage and the natural way of life.

I liked that Katie was a strong and competent lady, despite being in what is clearly an abusive relationship. Incidentally, she doesn’t believe in ironing either, and the children all learned self-defensive cookery at early ages.Stella used to live in Tamzin’s cottage and longed for a perfect life there with her husband but the truth is a little different.

I love the way in which the author makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story themselves and at the heart of the action. I think, the characters need a serious improvement and a deeper development so that the story can make a proper impact. Jane is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association and has a first class honours degree in creative writing. It is an intimate, enclosed space and, although visually connected to the rest of Sissinghurst, with views of the Elizabethan tower and the Tudor front range, it feels secluded. Despite this, the writing is funny and familiar and I enjoyed the humour as well as the heartwarming way Tamzin looks after the fox, Brack. In contrast, the garden room is perfect on warm summer days, with doors out onto the patio for alfresco living.

The Cottage of Secrets is a vivid collection of stories that will appeal to those who enjoy mysteries. The people Ellie meets on her journey made me yearn for a simpler life, where no one was a stranger, and all gathered together for a drink in the evening. As the cottage reveals more of its secrets, Tamzin is desperate to find out whether Stella got her happy ending.I love being able to find the back story this way and Rebecca really drew me in; the descriptions of the island were glorious and the people so believable and welcoming: I want to visit Morwan now! They sew and paint and go to therapy and don’t get into physical fights, and none of those characteristics precludes them from making the leading lady scream in the sheets. We find out the cottage is Tamzin’s new beginning, though we don’t find out what happened to her before until later on. Jane Lovering has a wonderful writing style, and I really enjoyed the touches of comedy straight away in Tamzin’s chapter.
