Cross, Daniel T. (2019-04-15). "A sun-powered bicycle path glows in the dark in Poland". Sustainability Times . Retrieved 2021-09-30. Strontium becomes immobilized in the environment as insoluble strontium carbonate and is incorporated into the shells of deep sea creatures. Strontium has no function in the human body but it is present in our bones on account of its similarity to calcium. Indeed strontium salts are now given to treat osteoporosis because it stimulates bone growth and bone density. Strontium chloride hexahydrate (SrCl 2 .6H 2O) is also an ingredient in toothpastes for sensitive teeth, plugging the holes which give access to the tooth's nerve. The main mining areas for lanthanoids are China and the US and reserves of europium are estimated to be ca 150,000 tonnes. World production of the pure metal is in excess of 100 tonnes per year, which is obtained by heating europium oxide with lanthanum metal in a tantalum crucible under vacuum conditions. The metal can also be obtained by electrolysing molten EuCl 3 and NaCl using graphite electrodes. Light and colour The principles involved are relatively simple and if the conditions are right, then the effect is great. However, if the circumstances or conditions are not right e.g.. the distance from the light source is too short or relative direction / viewing angle are too wide etc etc, then the retro-reflective effect will be negligible. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef] Glow powders now come in different glow colours i.e. green, aqua, blue, orange white, purple and red. Each glow colour has a different set of performance dynamics in terms of its glow colour, intensity and duration. Green for example is the core glow engine of every coloured glow product, it is the brightest and longest glowing of all glow colours and underpins all the other glow colours. Correspondingly red is the weakest and the shortest lived.

[ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef][ Green Version] Natural strontium is a mixture of four stable isotopes: 84Sr, 86Sr, 87Sr, and 88Sr. [9] On these isotopes, 88Sr is the most abundant, makes up about 82.6% of all natural strontium, though the abundance varies due to the production of radiogenic 87Sr as the daughter of long-lived beta-decaying 87 Rb. [20] This is the basis of rubidium–strontium dating. Of the unstable isotopes, the primary decay mode of the isotopes lighter than 85Sr is electron capture or positron emission to isotopes of rubidium, and that of the isotopes heavier than 88Sr is electron emission to isotopes of yttrium. Of special note are 89Sr and 90Sr. The former has a half-life of 50.6days and is used to treat bone cancer due to strontium's chemical similarity and hence ability to replace calcium. [21] [22] While 90Sr (half-life 28.90years) has been used similarly, it is also an isotope of concern in fallout from nuclear weapons and nuclear accidents due to its production as a fission product. Its presence in bones can cause bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and leukemia. [23] The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident contaminated about 30,000km 2 with greater than 10kBq/m 2 with 90Sr, which accounts for about 5% of the 90Sr which was in the reactor core. A colourful use of strontium, and one for which the element cannot be substituted, is the use of Sr(NO 3) 2 to provide the intense red of warning flares and it is also used in fireworks. Modern glow in the dark paints rely on strontium aluminate, which absorbs light during the day and releases it slowly for hours afterwards. In addition, strontium titanate (SrTiO 3) has been used in optical devices and crystals of the compound out-sparkle diamond because they have a higher refractive index. However, the crystals have not been widely used as gemstones because their surfaces are easily scratched. Isotopes, natural or not Pathak, P.K.; Kurchania, R.
