About this deal

Tizen may have made more sense when it was released in 2015 and proprietary OSes like this were more common and less developed, but compared with something like the intuitive, streamlined Google TV, it’s really showing its age. If it was once intended as an all-encompassing platform, its having been removed from Samsung’s phones and Galaxy Watch smartwatch line make it now feel more like a relic than an integrated part of the TV experience. Samsung 65-inch Class S95B OLED 4K Smart TV (QN65S95BAF) review: Remote Basically Samsung, as usual, seems more prepared to take the brakes off with its default Standard picture preset than most rival brands (with the possible exception of Philips). Perhaps especially so with the S95B, given that the company is no doubt keen to push the benefits of its new take on OLED technology since its great rival LG has dominated the OLED space for so long.

Both models also feature thin bezels and include a stand in the box for convenient placement on a media unit, although they can both be wall mounted if you so desire. Samsung opts for a centre-mounted, low-profile square pedestal, whereas Sony has swapped its incredibly heavy stand from the A95K for a pair of angled feet (as seen above). The versatile stand from the A95K will be missed as it could be mounted in two ways to either sit flush against a wall or give the TV a floating appearance, but its deceiving mass could be a problem. Given the S95B is built on first-generation technology, I understand why some might be reluctant to buy it, but given that the TV is built on two long-standing technologies — OLED and quantum dots — which are simply fused together in a new way, I see no reasons to doubt the TV’s longevity.

Its remarkable colour, contrast and, by OLED standards, brightness capabilities together with another aggressive Samsung presentation make HDR games look dazzlingly colourful, punchy, sharp and ‘alive’. Beyond anything even LG’s mighty G2 can do, in fact. Smart features are provided courtesy of Samsung’s latest Tizen OS, and offer the most comprehensive streaming app support in town. The only notable absentee is the Freeview Play app that collates the catch up services of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters into a handy umbrella interface. All of those broadcasters’ catch up apps are provided individually, though.

Sharpness levels with both upscaled HD and native 4K are very good – though perhaps not quite as blisteringly crisp as those of Samsung’s premium 4K LCD TVs. The sharpness remains high when there’s motion in the image too – especially if you take the edge off the screen’s native judder with a touch of Samsung’s motion processing. Samsung’s default motion settings, however, tend to generate too many messy side effects – choose a custom mode with judder and blur both set to around level three and noise reduction off for the cleanest results, or potentially leave the blur element a bit higher if you want a bit more sharpness. The S95B’s all-new panel design is driven by a specially adapted version of Samsung’s Neural Quantum Processor 4K, complete with elements devoted to boosting brightness and colour, enhancing perceived resolution and improving upscaling of sub-4K content.

Design, Connections and Control

Following a recent firmware update, Filmmaker Mode does as it should – it provides a simple route to pictures that match pretty accurately the standards typically used in the home video mastering world. Compared to the Movie preset, though, we find it looks flat – but it’s important that it’s there.

That said, while the QN90B’s bright display creates some dazzling color, it can’t hold a candle to the S95B’s color, particularly during HDR content. While the QN90B covers about 91% of the wide HDR color gamut (DCI-P3), the S95B sits at around 98%. This means the S95B displays colors that are more true to life—blue skies and trees that look closer to what we see outside. Reds and greens practically leap off the S95B's screen. I was particularly impressed with the S95B’s handling of skin tones, skies, and color gradients.Fully prepared for the S95B to not live up to the QD-OLED hype, despite the success of Sony’s A95K, in fact we couldn’t suppress an involuntary ‘wow’ as soon as we clapped eyes on the Samsung set’s pictures. that violates any law, statute, ordinance or regulation (including, but not limited to, those governing export control, consumer protection, unfair competition, anti-discrimination or false advertising);
