The Garmin Zumo XT debuted in early 2020, as an adventure-focused motorcycle GPS system. Previous Garmin units had the option to select the twistiest roads automatically. The XT takes things a step further, with “Garmin Adventurous Routing.” Use this option when automatically mapping a route, and you can incorporate unpaved roads, 4×4 trails and other fun, while staying inside public land boundaries (a very important feature in the U.S.). When the Zumo recognizes the USB connection, press continue to use file transfer mode, wait a bit while the drivers are installed. Photo: Garmin More help and information For fun, I even mounted up my iPhone next to the zūmo XT to see how their street directions compared. In most cases, the directions were essentially the same. The iPhone, however, seemed to have an edge when it came to reacting to traffic during a route, giving me a warning sooner than the Garmin. This should come as no surprise when you consider that the iPhone is a networked computer with a GPS function and the XT is a self-contained GPS with networking and traffic monitoring added on. (I’m also going to assume that Apple has access to more traffic information sources than Garmin due to its comparative corporate size.) In my time testing the XT, it redirected me around traffic issues about as frequently (at least from the seat of my pants) as my iPhone on the constantly-changing streets of Los Angeles. The first half fixed the fault, a couple of days later it found the same software version again and I installed that. After that 'Closest Entry' worked just fine. A fuse is included, though not attached to the wire – I didn’t use it as I powered the device from my Hex ezCAN (review here), which also powers it down when the ignition’s turned off.
