About this deal

Frequency response is 20-20,000Hz for the VM95C, 20-22,000Hz for the VM95E, 20-23,000Hz for the VM95EN and 20-25,000Hz for the VM95ML and VM95SH. Because of that, I tend to swap out my stylus and use the microline for older records and save the Shibata for late night MFSL/MMJ/Tone Poet type stuff.

I am in no doubt that in 38 years time the VM95 will be every bit as revered and coveted as its predecessor. I’ve just had a long flirtation with carefully manufactured Vinyl Engine arc templates using LP5’s own tonearm measurements (and a VM95SH) which proved to my ears, and a YouTube video blogger’s ears, that A T were absolutely right. For this I used the 1k test tones on the LP and then measured in Audacity after applying some noise filters. Seems to me it is part of the tonal balance that this profile gives to the sound (of course based on the samples, YouTube comparisons and frequency graphs I found). Now, I know that inner groove distortion is inherit in the vinyl medium; however, it is true that the right stylus for your system can make this defect inaudible.I digitized at 96/24 a selection (Gigout's "Grand Chorus in Dialogue") from Music For Organ, Brass and Percussion (Columbia M 31193) featuring E. I'd imagine that 49mm is what the VM95ML needs on AT turntables - but it should be easy enough to move it forward a bit. I'll be changing only the stylus so it should be "fair" in that sense, although I can't promise level-matching to the nth degree.

The tracks I chose were: Paul Simon's "Armistice Day" from the Paul Simon album (original US pressing, bought used - VG+) and R. First I should say that an arc isn’t necessarily ‘best’, it’s just another way of achieving an alignment. I'm glad you've figured out the spending a bit more for a higher end profile tip is probably the thing most people should consider. I do love it for house and Reggae music though, that’s probably the frustrated DJ in me but for the other genres I listen too Soul, Blues and some Rock and Jazz I seems to prefer the sound coming from the Node 2i.Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more. Low, medium, and high frequencies are all clear and each record plays with such a sense of space and balance. There is a minor discrepancy in VTA using the two different headshells so I split the difference and left it that way for the test.

For this review, a VM95 body (supplied with the VM95SH) was mounted in a Technics SL-1200 using a standard Technics headshell and the AT-provided 8 mm fasteners.I'm happy to report that having the Schiit Mani now doing the preamp work, it has transformed the sound quality into more of what I was expecting through an "upgrade". If you get one already mounted in a headshell, the alignment might indeed not be quite right for your turntable.

Audio Appraisal Audio-Technica AT-VM95 Detailed Review - Audio Appraisal

In conclusion, this stylus is a game-changer for the new-to-vinyl or modest audiophile crowd (like me! The VM95EN tip sounds very similar to the elliptical, as expected given that they are essentially the same tip. Also, apologies for the length; however, I know that for those new(ish) to vinyl (like me), it's the information below that is needed. While the 95E is capable of producing some superb sound (especially for the cost), I discovered that there are just simply limitations to elliptical styli; they are not capable of reading inner grooves accurately and tend to be useless in avoiding harsh sibilance and distortion. This is probably the best ‘bang for buck’ in the range, and is likely the point where existing owners of the AT95, especially the AT95XE, will want to enter into the VM95 family. The bonded elliptical stylus of the 110 being replaced with the nude stylus of the 200 along with a boron canteliver and I have to say I'm delighted with the results.
