About this deal

Normally, you need a dedicated macro lens if you want to take close-up, macro, or microscopic photos. Tough cameras are the base for an expandable photography system with waterproof lenses, protective cases, and an underwater housing for deep dives.

Additional housings, conversion lenses and adapters – including those for underwater use – ensure that this is more of a base for an expandable system, rather than just a standalone tough camera.

The photos below illustrate the frustration of such a shallow depth of field in close-up or macro photography. The most famous photographs were made with cameras that we would consider inferior by today’s standards. To ensure you get the best from your shots you have 25 contrast detection autofocus points that include a Single AF, AF Tracking and Face Detection modes. Because of this camera’s smaller sensor size (and difficulty capturing extreme dynamic range), I am not putting much hope in the RAW files.

So as they say, if it ain't broke then don't fix it –and you'd really have to go some way to break this camera, as you can see in our video review below. Like a wilderness travel guide, the TG-6 pulls you into the micro world, under the water, and down deeper trails than you would ever take your clunky DSLR down. Granted, the inclusion of such a feature might introduce a point of vulnerability, but it would perhaps be possible to include a small rounded selfie mirror on the camera's front itself instead; it's perhaps something for the designers of the next generation to consider. But it’s a labor-intensive process and you’re not likely going to do it on a whim while on a nature hike.

Other, arguably fairly minor, improvements, include the addition of anti-reflective coating on both sides of the sensor cover glass, which should help to reduce flare and ghosting, a more sophisticated focus stacking algorithm, new Bleach Bypass and Instant Camera art filters, and a 1080p HD time-lapse mode to add to the existing 4k and 720p options. But the amazing thing about the Olympus Tough TG-6 is that it can actually do both the focus bracketing and focus stacking for you – all in-camera! The TG-6 will go on sale from early July along with a number of new useful accessories for the expandable Tough photography system. com is a trading name of Jessops Europe Limited, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 08384909. It feels solid in the palm, while conveniently fitting in a pocket, and at no point does its internally stacked 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens protrude from the body and possibly into harm’s way.Our test unit came in red livery, while it's also available in all black if you want something that looks more understated than sporty. Still, as the TG-6 is all about capturing photos that, on occasion, you wouldn’t risk another camera to achieve, we can make some allowances here. The combined SD card and battery compartment at the TG-6’s base, and the side compartment that houses HDMI and USB ports, are protected by doors with a double-catch mechanism to prevent them from being opened accidentally underwater, or at another inopportune moment. With the lens set to its maximum 25mm wide angle and the aperture wide open at f2, the TOUGH TG6’s lens can produce some nicely blurred backgrounds providing you’re close enough to the subject. For example, when shooting from as close as 1 cm to the subject, a 1 mm subject can be magnified to up to 44 mm on the monitor.

One of the biggest problems you’re going to run into with close-up photography is a shallow depth of field. Capture your adventures in unbelievably lifelike resolution with spectacular detail and vibrant color. The Olympus Tough series arguably started the rugged camera trend in earnest, and the TG-6 certainly feels like one of the better options out there, even if innovation has slowed somewhat. Using your phone you can remotely change the exposure mode between iAUTO, Program auto, Aperture priority, Microscope, and Scene mode without touching the camera’s mode dial.It would be easy to reaffix, and doesn't affect the camera's operability, but it was a tad surprising to encounter such a weak spot.
