About this deal

Over Wi-Fi, you have to connect the phone to the camera, sync the time, set the App to geotagging. Then you can close the wifi link to the camera, but you must keep the app running on your phone. That means you will need to find it in the Battery menu and prevent the phone from automatically closing it when not in use. The Lens Control ring is also crafted from metal and it feels just as solid; the rest of the body appears to be made from a polycarbonate, but overall build quality is still very good. Utilizing the 0.21-inch 2,330k-dot equivalent Live View Finder (LVF) or the big 3.0-inch 1840k-dot static touch type control monitor, it is easy to frame every shot, even in bright, sunny conditions. The monitor tilts up to 180 degrees – perfect for selfies. Use the 22 digital filter options, which can also be applied to panoramic images, to complete your creativity.

Up until recently, standalone compact cameras like the TZ95 have been increasingly thin on the ground. But now some manufacturers have decided that cameras with built-in lenses could be somewhat re-purposed as tools for the new wave of content creators – see alternatives including the Sony ZV-1, ZV-1 II, and ZV-1F - and Canon’s quirky PowerShot V10–

So, while operationally the Panasonic Lumix TZ95 is pretty up to scratch and fulfills most of our expectations, what is the case when it comes to image quality? Is a big zoom on a small camera over-egging the pudding or capably fulfilling demand? Read on to find out... The 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that holds 20.3MP appears to be the same as the one in the ZS70, as does the 30x LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR optical zoom lens that covers a 35mm-equivalent range of 24-720mm; and thankfully this is stabilized, so that it can continue to deliver sharp images regardless of where you are in the focal range. Overall though, we were pretty happy with the shots we got from the Panasonic Lumix TZ95, particularly given the limitations outlined above. But then we were unusually blessed with plenty of spring sunshine... The other features to be found on the Panasonic Lumix TZ95’s faceplate are a narrow window housing the flash that sits just below the Lumix logo. Unfortunately the flash is in a position where your forefinger can very easily obscure it when gripping the camera with the right hand – so that’s something you need to be aware of, especially when handing the camera to someone else to take your picture, as well one might when travelling. Nestled next to the lens meanwhile, where it is out of the way of stray fingertips, is a familiar AF assist /self timer lamp. TZ95: Max. 4x (When Digital Zoom is used simultaneously with Intelligent Zoom, you can only increase the zoom ratio up to 2x.)/TZ96/TZ97: Max. 2x

The raw shooting option is great for those who intend to process their images later on a computer, while the flip-up screen also makes it ideal for anyone who imagines they will be capturing selfies or group shots – particularly as the face detection works so well. The LUMIX TZ95 is equipped with several advanced features, all intended to help you get the best shot. Intelligent Auto, P, A, S, M, Creative Video, C (Custom), Panorama Shot, Scene Guide, Creative Control Switching macro focusing on is a good idea if you want to get super-close to your subjects, and can be particularly useful for flowers and detail shots, for example. Compared to the 20mp Canon Powershot SX740, the Panasonic gives lower noise at ISO800 and above, although colour saturation remains stronger on the Canon.Compared to the 18mp Sony Cyber-shot HX99, the Panasonic gives slightly better results at ISO800 and ISO1600, but it's pretty minimal.Compared to the 16mp Nikon Coolpix A1000, the Nikon gives slightly better noise performance, ignoring the focusing issues we had with the A1000. For the best noise results, the 12mp Panasonic Lumix TZ70 still holds the title for this type of camera with the same size sensor. As with its TZ90 predecessor, with the ZS80 its manufacturer again puts the camera’s autofocus response time down as a swift 0.1 seconds. In practice, that means if we can visualize a potential image before squeezing its shutter release button then the ZS80 is liable to be able to capture it. The zoom lens is similarly swift to respond, traveling the extent of its focal range from maximum wide angle to extreme telephoto setting in 3-4 seconds. The lens’ gliding operation is accompanied by a commendably low mechanical buzz. With smartphones putting in more impressive performances these days, you’re going to have to think long and hard about whether a dedicated camera such as this is right for you. Still, if you don’t have an advanced smartphone, or zooming is what you crave, it remains a good option. Here’s the field of view captured by the Lumix TZ95 / ZS80 when set to its maximum 24mm equivalent wide angle setting. It’s the same as the COOLPIX A1000 and the maximum aperture of f3.3 is so close to the f3.4 of the COOLPIX A1000 as to make little difference.
