Full-bodied and warm on the palate with good flavour definition and length. Drinking well now, but no real hurry, this wine would suit succulent pig or even wild boar. (Patricia Stefanowicz) The high and sunny Salta region of North West Argentina has a drier and more extreme climate than other parts of the country and because of that the Malbecs from here tend towards more concentration and fragrance. The majority of the wine spends 12 months ageing in a mix of French and American oak, with about a third maturing in stainless steel. The result is a wien with rich, soft and fruity aromas that lead onto a palate of plum jam, raisins, tobacco, chocolate, vanilla and toasted notes. The historic Catena Zapata vineyards (first planted in 1902) are planted with the Catena family’s proprietary selection of Malbec, the Catena Cuttings. In 2018 the Catena Alta Malbec is sourced from Lot 18 of the Angélica vineyard, Lot 4 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 1 of the Nicasia vineyard, Lot 6 of the Angélica Sur vineyard and Lot 9 of the Adrianna vineyard. The resulting wine has an appealing deep cherry colour with baked summer pudding fruits, creamy wood and floral overtones. Bright acidity and silky tannin give a nicely balanced wine in a restrained style with integrated fruit, wood and structure and good length. A wine for turkey or game birds and Camargue red rice. (Patricia Stefanowicz) Situated high up in the remote, northern Salta region of Argentina Bodega El Esteco sits in the small town of Cafayate among some of the world's highest altitude vineyards. They've been around for quite a while. The winery was first established by David Michel and Gabriela Torino in 1892. At that time it was known as La Rosa Winery, but following its acquisition by Grupo Peñaflor, one of Argentina's largest wine producers, in recent years they've been known as Bodega El Esteco. In total they have over 800 hectares of vines across the region, so are quite a substantial operation. The head winemaker is Alejando Pepa who makes good use of their extensive, modern facilities to craft their exemplary wines.
