About this deal

Perfectly Good Food is a killer book to have on the shelf, whether it’s to look for recipes, get ideas for reorganizing your fridge, or figure out what to do with those dang carrot scraps. Asparagus and Parmesan Risotto- this was the best dish we tried… and it was from a chapter of recipes written by other people. The author is apparently some kind of social media star, delivering cooking videos to legions of fans.

Knife Drop: Creative Recipes Anyone Can Cook - Goodreads

Recipes range from classics (buttermilk fried chicken, cozy beef chili, and devil's food cupcakes) to original creations (blueberry Brie grilled cheese, spicy mezcal rigatoni, and no-churn Nutella ice cream). I was recently at a dinner party where a friend’s husband talked for literally an hour about how his father had become a beekeeper, so maybe I have a soft spot for this one, but I love the idea of a whole book dedicated to the art of beekeeping and its delicious produce. Home-cooked food doesn't have to be over-the-top, fussy, or time-intensive to be absolutely amazing. The first cookbook of celebrity chef and Masterchef US finalist Nick DiGiovanni, Knife Drop is a beautifully produced glossy paged edition. The theme here seems to be interesting, creative, restaurant-quality types of dishes, but which can be (relatively) easily prepared by home cooks in a home kitchen.I explained the chemistry behind this to my son before doing it for the review and, as predicted, hot grease exploded all over my kitchen. Just one look at the table of contents tells us that we’re not talkin’ about the bean burgers, soy isolate patties, and grilled portobellos your uncle makes fun of you for eating at family barbecues; no, this bad boy features recipes for everything from baked falafel burgers and spicy peanut and carrot burgers to seitan burgers with mango barbecue sauce. Welcome to Flavor Zone, a monthly column in which your kitchen-savvy VICE editors recommend the tastiest, juiciest, most appetizing new cookbooks on the shelves. I don’t doubt that this guy is a great cook, but something went wrong with producing this cookbook in my opinion. The instructions are simple, and DiGiovanni's light humor ("I'm convinced nuggets taste better in dinosaur form," he says of the dino chicken nuggets) and anecdotes ("My grandpa taught my brothers and me to catch blue crabs when we were little, so this dish always reminds me of him," he says of the crab and artichoke dip with Old Bay crostini) add charm.

Lately, however, I spend my time trying to enjoy life, which entails a lot of cooking, entertaining, staying active, and taking in our world’s great cinema (aka browsing Maangchi cooking videos and rewatching Girls). To be sure, there are several recipes in here that look just as impressive as anything you might find in a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with relatively simple ingredients and techniques accessible to home chefs. Nick DiGiovanni is a chef, food content creator, and world record holder for numerous food-related feats. I appreciate the scope of this cookbook, and I look forward to sharing this book with my soon-to-graduate children to have references for successful cooking later in life. Green goddess dressing tastes great on everything, but it pairs particularly well with cucumbers for a crunchy, creamy, and refreshing salad.Stacey Mei Yan Fong’s 50 Pies, 50 States is a fine example of how I wish more people approached writing cookbooks: by asking me to cook and eat a bunch of pie, but also by having an extremely unique, gripping, fun story to tell. The edition is bold, one recipe per double page, paired with effective Instagrammable, eye-catchingly clever photographs. This book will help you master the best practices, and then hopefully give you enough confidence to break them yourself," promises MasterChef finalist DiGiovanni in his accessible debut.

He auditioned for Gordon Ramsay's MasterChef TV competition in 2018 during his senior year at Harvard. Still, this month brought a colorful Indian street food extravaganza and the reissue of a book chronicling one man’s quest to create a bunch of truly wild veggie burgers. DiGiovanni's clear passion for food will inspire home cooks of all levels to embark on their own culinary adventures. I'm trying to do one recipe a week, and then I'll probably just start over from the beginning and repeat forever. During his final year at Harvard in 2018 he auditioned for Gordon Ramsay's MasterChef, becoming the youngest finalist in the competition.Knife Drop also includes Nick's expert advice on equipment, ingredients, and techniques, so home cooks of any ability level can pick up some new skills. I love how herbaceous and powerful all the flavors in this book are; and, most importantly, it makes me feel like I could actually make some great naan. Home-cooked food doesn’t have to be over-the-top, fussy, or time-intensive to be absolutely amazing.
