About this deal

Wyl Menmuir dives deep into a world of sea-souls – swimmers and surfers and sailors, birders, beachcombers and rowers – and with meditative charm addresses that perennial, unanswerable question: what makes us so oblivious to danger and discomfort and pulls us again and again to the water? First, living on the West coast in Washington state next to the Pacific Ocean and now living in Florida next to the Gulf of Mexico.

As I made my way west along the beach from the lobster pot, I set about making my usual internal bargain. Beautifully written and truly unique, The Draw of the Sea is up there with the very best writing on nature and the great outdoors. These interactions are interspersed with recollections and meditative musings about what the sea means to him and his family as he tries to answer the question: why it is that some of us are unable resist the force of the tide on our souls? Adam Farrer, author of Cold Fish Soup 'A beautiful, wise and charming book’ Charlie Carroll, author of The Lip 'Roger Deakin would have been proud to have written it himself.

Wyl Menmuir's The Draw of the Sea is a book about the fishermen, surfers, swimmers, beachcombers, conservationists, sailors and boatbuilders who make their living on the Cornish Coast. Menmuir's nature writing is gorgeous, but his novelist's knack for storytelling and character development is what really lifts "The Draw of the Sea" and gives the book its heart. I read this at my home by the sea in New Jersey, sometimes on the beach on lovely sunny days and sometimes from a rocking chair inside my house, looking out at the wind and rain. This book is a meaningful and moving work into how we interact with the environment around us, and how it comes to shape the course of our lives . We're used to stories of the sea being a grand voyage; a tale of derring-do; perhaps a romantic escapade.

There’s a wonderful story of the traditional method of hunting conger eels in Scilly – you suspend a small boy in front of the hole in which they live, wait for the eel to wrap itself around him and then pull the boy up. As unmissable as it is compelling, as profound as it is personal, this must-read book will delight anyone familiar with the intimate and powerful pull which the sea holds over us.In the specifics of these livelihoods and their rich histories and traditions, Wyl Menmuir captures the universal human connection to the sea. The connection and affinity certain people have for the sea comes through strong and is so beautiful to read about.

Rockpoolers seek out sheltered coves in which they can observe the St Piran’s hermit crabs, scarlet and gold cup corals, and snakelocks anemones, as they go about their mysterious lives. Art Supplies This is a list of the supplies we used, but feel free to use whatever you have in your home or classroom.Award-winning artist Jonathan Newey teaches you to transform simple shapes into characterful creatures including dolphins, clownfish, crabs, jellyfish, whales, sharks, turtles and more.

It was also a fascinatingly rich and endlessly joyful insight into the lives of communities and people for whom the sea is more than just a landscape. Throughout the book there is a subtle but strong theme; man must respect the ocean, its creatures and change our terrible polluting ways, because we cannot survive without the seas. But there is undeniably a thrill to finding something that connects us to our past, or to another part of the world. They include the beachcomber, the lobster fisherman, rock pool enthusiasts, free divers, surf board makers, dawn swimmers, gig rowers and artists. The Draw of the Sea will evoke both the specific and the universal appeal of the sea in the same way that James Rebanks evoked both the specific and the universal in The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District.
