About this deal

As with all Norton anthologies, this one s well annotated and introduced; additionally, each theorist and critic has his or her own introduction, along with a helpful primary and secondary bibliography. A scholar of American literature and American literary criticism, Professor Cain is the author of The Crisis in Criticism: Theory, Literature, and Reform in English Studies (Johns Hopkins UP), F. However, a good selection from each is included, as is a quick preface for each individual containing a holistic overview of their biographical information and theoretical contributions to their respective fields. I look forward to reading more from it, if I ever have time, and I'm sure it will be a valuable reference tool for the future.

They helped place the excerpt or essay in context and really enhanced my ability to understand the theory. As an anthology it does a good job and is helpful for those who don't necessarily want to read it all. It can't ever hope to replace original texts of course, but either as an introduction or a handy collection for easy reference, it does hold a vast selection of real gems.Offering 191 pieces by 157 authors, The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, Third Edition, is more comprehensive and more varied in its selection than any other anthology. This book has most things covered (I haven't sat and read through it yet, but skimming through I have found 90% of lecture references) and means no more cowering behind a mountain of books.

Since then, I've constantly referenced the writings contained inside as an undergrad of English, then as a graduate student of journalism (interested most in ideas of replication, what it means to be "original") and finally working on my thesis, in which this book has illuminated my understanding of hegemonic structures, the artifice (? New selections from non-western theory and a thoroughly updated twentieth century selection make the book even more diverse and authoritative. Just one paper in the whole thing offered what was for me a compelling and new perspective, and that was Georges Poulet's "Phenomenology of Reading. He is the author of Theory and the Novel: Narrative Reflexivity in the English Tradition (Cambridge UP) and the editor of PC Wars: Politics and Theory in the Academy (Routledge), The Institution of Literature (SUNY Press), and Critics at Work: Interviews (NYU Press). Forty-eight NEW selections-concentrated mostly on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries-make the book not only the best overview of the history of theory, but also a remarkably up-to-date portrait of the state of theory today.
