About this deal

Great if your mate has just jumped into the ocean, an event I rarely encounter. I’ve never used it. I think I’ve used it once in the whole time that I’ve owned this GPS. It’s not that the sunrise and sunset reports are inaccurate, simply that I have never needed this function. If it’s getting dark I go to sleep, if sunlight is prodding at my eyelids I wake up! Simple. The GPS position format is important. This setting must match the maps you’re using. Most important is the Map Datum, which is the coordinate format your GPS will use. Out for a lovely evening walk, putting the Garmin eTrex 10 through its paces, the basics of GPS navigation. The 10 is superb in that it keeps you tied to the map and compass but offers what i think is the utter goldmine of info on a hill - grid ref within 3m

The means of testing was to take all three units to a known spot height and then take a reading. My eTrex 10 is over 5 years old and still the readings were within a few metres of those shown on the newer navigation aids. You’ll now see a numeric keypad and navigation arrows. Use the keypad to enter the coordinates from your map. If you don’t need to change a particular digit, use the left and right arrows to navigate past it. On the 33 mile walk we look at pre walk planning, transferring a .gpx file onto a Garmin Fenix watch and then we set off along St Cuthbert's Way. In this walk and talk I am joined by two special guests, Amon and Antony from the Bullitt Group, who created the Motorola Defy satellite link. After planning the route on my computer I show you how to transfer it onto your Garmin Fenix watch using the Connect app on a mobile phone.

Handheld/Outdoor FAQs

Out for a lovely August evening walk, putting the Garmin Montana 700i through its paces on a 11-mile walk, the basics of GPS navigation. The power button is mounted on the top right of the body. To turn on the eTrex 10 simply press and hold for a couple of seconds. If you are worrying about this being accidentally switched on, don’t. You don’t have to press hard, but chances of you accidentally powering on the device are incredibly remote. I’ve been on numerous trips and never once managed to achieve this feat. The eTrex 10 GPS Menu System We look at the key benefits of this GPS unit and also the navigational experience you get when you import a .gpx file.

Not everything goes to plan! In this walk and talk I put the Garmin GPSMAP 66i through its paces in The Cheviot Hills. The eTrex 10 has many features that you’ll never touch. Sailing around the world? Please do learn how to activate the man overboard feature. Improved ability to clear unit settings on power up: now only requires menu key and enter key to be held when powering the unit on Sadly it was a wet and windy day, but what better conditions to put this top end buttoned GPS unit through it's paces.

System requirements

Another thought is that it depends what you want out of a GPS. If you want to leave the map in the bag and just ride, then it will do that. It depends on how big the route and how much extra navigation you need to do if you modify your route. I regularly use the waypoint function and found it so useful that I used it to map my journey across Greenland. The Digital Compass The three main areas of the navigation system of the ETrex that I use are: bearings, white points and routes. I’m going to cover each of these in detail shortly but for now I just like to skim across some of the other functions that you can use on this GPS device. The Sunrise/Sunset Feature

We look at how to use a Garmin inReach mini2 to navigate with and also how to send messages from a Garmin inReach mini2. Some hikers will have a use for this feature. I don’t. I have never used the sunrise/sunset function, but I’m sure some people will find it handy. Man Overboard I first import a .gpx file and then edit it into a day section before transferring it onto the Garmin GPSMAP 66s.In this walk and talk I take the Garmin GPSMAP 65s out for a walk to the Shepherd’s Cairn, above Alnham in the Cheviot Hills. This might disappoint some of you and that’s understandable. But this review of the Garmin eTrex 10 is nothing but honest.

Summary of the walk and my thoughts on both the Garmin GPSMAP 67 and the Zoleo two-way satellite communicator - 20:20 In this walk and talk around the Simonside Hills in Northumberland I look at how to use a Garmin epix (Gen2) GPS watch on this walk and talk.Metric, staute or nautical. I recommend metric (metres and kilometres) for activities like hiking, skiing and expeditions. GPS Position Format
