Believe me, I am not here to echo the praises of Goodnight Punpun; others have made the case for its genius in more convincing ways than I ever could. Even Oran, who seems to be the most contrived in personality, is developed in a clever way, negating her character of any criticism I could give. The plot develops at a relatively slow pace in the beginning, but there is much to uncover regarding the world-building and dialogue. And even worse, those events mostly turned out to be pointless drama anyways, making each additional one just being a reason to roll eyes and take a break from reading rather than emotional or shocking experience for a reader.

Is it worth getting for someone who haven't read anything by Asano yet and is looking to read some good Sci Fi manga? Dededede plays with comedy, slice-of-life, sci-fi, and drama, which are fused together beautifully in this melting pot of a manga.

Coming to "DeDeDe" I was expecting either deep dive, psychological exploitation, emotions or just captivating story, and was met with product, which I believe, is impossible to experience as not only non-native, but not as an experienced citizen of Tokyo. If you're unfamiliar with Asano's work but would like to get acquainted, this is a great place to start. Other works by Asano include Hikari no Machi (City of Light), Nijigahara Holograph, and Umibe no Onna no Ko (A Girl on the Shore). The artwork and art style is amazing, combining the style of Asano's previous works with a newer more abstract style that adds to the strange context of the story. Despite this unique and tragic event, high school girls Koyama Kadode and Nakagawa Ouran behave as if nothing has changed. Its a decent manga with an enjoyable concept and characters but that's about what it really is, other than that its a lot of potential sent to the trash can, and the ending was pure garbage. Bulgakov pulled it amazingly in "Master and Margaret", and ever since so many, especially Japanese manga authors, are trying the same with at best, tolerable results.It was also awarded an Excellence Award in the Manga Division at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2022.

The storyline here is like cancer caution warnings on the pack of smokes - no one cares, not even the smokes makers! The main two characters, Kadode and Oran, are enjoyable personalities who offer an interesting perspective on the world. its very intentional but the author decides to make the characters look so weird and ugly, especially the women. Kadode can feel like an Asano self insert at times, but as the manga develops, her personality develops too, and she proves to be a multifaceted character in a later arc. These characters may seem like they are always fun-loving and cheery but they are really just coping in the only way they know how.It became overly ridiculous and unreal now that it was showing us such bullshit but honestly saying it was very enjoyable, despite it being so random, I enjoyed it! My secondary school life involved going into Belfast every day from 1970 to 1977, so there's a lot about the story is familiar and perhaps it gives me an appreciation for the dark comedy I sometimes lack. By far my favourite current author, and this series to which I newly intoduced myself to only cements that. It was serialized in Shogakukan's seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from April 2014 to February 2022, with its chapters collected in 12 tankōbon volumes.
