This novel is quite a departure from Day’s usual style, and is reminiscent of Geraldine Brooks’ technique of taking a few historical facts and embroidering them with a story. Lots of information, but very little crafting of a novel, and quite a disappointment as I enjoyed reading her other novel Lambs of God.

A prune sauce does well as an accompaniment, as is commonly served with land fowl, but other savoury sauces can be served, with ground ginger or other spices that may be at hand, and a little sugar.
