About this deal

I know some readers took exception with a vividly described scene of a young girl's induction into prostitution. This was also a very memorable episode arc in the show. I think Jennifer Worth is to be commended for showing how gritty life could really be in the East End. While the show never attempts to shy away from the harsh realities that people were living in at the time, it's Jennifer Worth's words that really drive home the spirit of what the East End women really endured. No matter how harsh the realities are, new life endures, and with it, new hope.

This last book was filmed in very much the same manner but was not faithful to the book. It was quite a surprise to see that Worth had departed from her rose-tinted glasses stye of writing to author a hard-hitting, horrific picture of the dreadful time those early post-war years for the very poor in a very deprived area of London. In this educational, warm, easy, and humane book, the reader gets a glimpse of sleeping by the Cut, pig breeding, boys never found in secret hideouts, the discrete lives of nuns, and the maddening heartbreak of poverty, adoption, and brutal loss.

READERS GUIDE

In recent months, some statements by Heidi Thomas and Vanessa Redgrave hint at an imminent date on the release of ‘Call the Midwife 13’, and we will keep you updated as soon as we have a firm date.

Written in response to an article in The Midwives Journal lamenting the notable absence of midwives in literature, Call the Midwife offers a riveting look behind the scenes at one of the world’s earliest and most little–known professions. Worth’s memoir of her early years at Nonnatus House is alternately heartwarming and heart–wrenching and the stories she shares will fascinate anyone who enjoys a good yarn—but especially anyone who has ever had or plans to have a child. Well, in my day it was said that it took seven years to make a good midwife, so obviously experience counts a good deal. I think the innate ability to inspire confidence in a woman in travail must be high on the list. Training, knowledge, judgment, patience all come into it, and the capacity for hard work. After learning their respective histories, Worth radically changes her opinion of both Sister Evangelina and Mrs. Jenkins. Dr Turner, however, is furious that Sister Julienne is involved in private healthcare, no matter how honourable her intentions. “There will be no charge,” says the doctor pointedly when she asks him to look in on a patient, then laments that it is the “first cross word I’ve had with her in 20 years”.
