Samples are simply audio files like .wav files which you are free to use inside a DAW, such as Ableton, to make your music. The operation of the two Launchpads is the same. Due to the smaller size of the Launchpad, Mini MK1 and MK2 are labelled with numbers and letters, while the Launchpad MK2 has full labelling to correspond with their functions in Ableton Live. The main difference between the Launchpad Mini and Launchpad MK2 is the RGB light system. The Launchpad MK2 has an RGB light system that provides more information, such as the colours of Ableton clips, shown on the hardware. The Launchpad Mini MK1 and 2 do not have the RGB light system and contain only 4 colours (Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red). It's class compliant and doesn't need any drivers: you just install the software, plug it in and start performing. The Launchpad Mini MK3 and Launchpad X also feature RGB pads. Both of these Launchpads use a USB-C port. In the box, you’ll get a USB-C to A cable. Both have the option of setting brightness and customisation through Components (see our guide HERE). You can store up to 3 custom modes.
A plug-in is a small piece of additional software that works inside a digital audio workstation, such as Ableton Live Lite. Plug-ins tend to either be an extra instrument that you can use inside your software, like a synthesiser, or audio editing tools, like EQ, compression, reverb and so on. All devices are 64 Pad MIDI controllers compatible with Windows, macOS, and iOS devices. They all include Ableton Live Lite. Launchpad Mini & Launchpad MK2 When using faders, these Launchpads have a higher resolution, as you can press a pad 4 times to go through 4 different values. In Logic Pro 10.6, Launchpad X and Launchpad Mini [MK3] devices no longer need to be rotated to properly display the Live Loops grid, as was required in v10.5. However, there are orientation options in Logic’s settings that allow you to choose vertical or rotated arrangement, to suit your preference. This flexibility provides a much more cohesive experience, allowing you to seamlessly jump between different modes. Features These Launchpads also let you choose functions on the pads, changing how the grid works with Ableton. For example, the Mini can be set to have the bottom row of pads being Stop/Solo/Mute controls, while the other pads still show the Session grid.
In terms of new features, two things stand out. Firstly, the Mk3 now includes RGB colour matching pads, so you have a really accurate representation of what you see in your Live Session. Secondly, and in addition to the Live Session layout, there are three Custom layouts. Melodics is a desktop app that teaches you to play MIDI keyboards, pad controllers such as the Launchpad, and drums. It’s easy to use straight away with a range of presets for you to get started with, as well as giving the more experienced user the flexibility to create their unique sounds. The Launchpad Pro MK3 is at the top of the Launchpad range, it features the most sensitive pads, the most controls for Ableton Live, a standalone Sequencer and a standalone Chord mode. It also features the Note mode and Custom modes seen on the Launchpad X, with 8 available slots for Custom Modes.
