About this deal

Under the collective name of 'John Macnab', they set up a base in the Highland home of their young friend Sir Archie Roylance, Laird of Crask, disabled war veteran and local Conservative parliamentary candidate. As even the pleasure of shooting has palled, the three plan something “devilish difficult, devilish unpleasant, and calculated to make a man long for a dull life”. Adopting the nom de guerre John Macnab, they send letters to three Highland estates warning that a salmon or a stag will be killed and removed from the property during 48 hours, from midnight to midnight, and returned to the door of the big house. John Macnab will stand the cost. The 30in multichoke version weighs 8lb – a weight which provides a controlled, steady swing. The 32in version will be a touch heavier. As the wind began to stir again, Delaney found himself “wet and shivering” in pursuit of the final hurdle, with a “sense of gloom with each passing minute”. On a second attempt at Lady’s Loch, he at last had a take. “But there was no tension on the line and I couldn’t set the hook,” he recounts. “Another notch down on the mood, but proof of life. Finally, after another missed opportunity, I had a salmon on the hook. He took several runs, and even jumped out of the net once when gillie John Wildgoose [Goose] tried to scoop him up, but, finally, at 6.53pm, we had a salmon on the grass and Goose let out a huge whoop. We did it.” MEGGERNIE MEMORIES Apart from drawing the comment that the ethics of cabinet ministers seem to have gone even further downhill since, the book also gave its name to the present-day Macnab challenge, which is to shoot a deer and a brace of grouse, and catch a salmon, all in a single day (in legal circumstances).

I don’t think we will ever better that day,” says David Rudge, estate manager of the Rhiedorrach Estate. To shoot a brace of grouse, grass a stag and land a salmon all in one day is a difficult task. For three men to successfully complete the Classic Macnab Challenge on the same day on the same estate is extraordinary. The three protagonists are old friends: Sir Edward Leithen, barrister and former Attorney General; John Palliser-Yeates, City banker; and Lord Lamancha, cabinet minister. At their club, with the help of Sir Archibald Roylance, whose Highland retreat will be their base, the ruse that will shake off their boredom takes shape. The sear lifter is connected directly to the trigger and is switched from side to side by a selector button on the safety catch. The three friends have recovered their zest for life, and towards the end of the year Archie Roylance marries Janet Raden. The barrels are 29in long which, in my view, is a good choice because it’s one that will suit most sportsmen whether they’re walking up game, shooting birds at flight or standing on a peg and waiting for birds to be driven over them.Find out all about John Macnab: who is he , and why has his name given rise to the ultimate sporting challenge? THE FIELD MACNAB CHALLENGE 2021 The fortunes of the Clan Macnab were restored to some extent when Angus's grandson, Gilbert, received a charter from David II of Scotland in 1336. [3] Gilbert was succeeded by his son, Sir Alexander Macnab, who died in about 1407. [3] 16th century and clan conflicts [ edit ] Following Buchan's original, the three issue challenges to a selection of Highland landowners signed in the cognomen 'John Macnab' undertaking to bag a salmon, brace of grouse and a stag respectively. The three estates to which the challenges are issued are, however, rather different from those in Buchan's novel: the first is owned by a Moroccan prince, the second by a consortium of billionaires headed by a Dutch merchant banker, while the third is the royal estate of Balmoral.

Chief Finlay Macnab was a man of peace but protected his lands against the foraging royalist forces of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose in the mid-1640s. [3] However Finlay's son, who was known as Smooth John, did not follow his father's peaceful ways and actually joined forces with Montrose, contributing to the royal victory at the Battle of Kilsyth in 1645. [3] Smooth John Macnab was appointed to garrison Montrose's own Kincardine Castle. [3] General David Leslie, Lord Newark subsequently laid siege to the castle. [3] The castle's whole garrison however, managed break through the Covenanter lines and fought their way clear, but John Macnab was captured. [3] He was taken to Edinburgh and sentenced to death but escaped on the eve of his execution. [3] He went on to lead three hundred of his clansmen at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. [3] A new feature is the long trigger guard and bottom strap which adds to the classic overall look of this gun. Robert Macnab, the fourteenth chief of Clan Macnab married a sister of John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Holland. This connection to the Clan Campbell constrained him from supporting the Jacobites in the rising of 1715, although many of his clansmen did take part. [3] The fifteenth chief was a major in the Hanoverian government army and was captured at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. He was then held prisoner in Doune Castle. [3] Clan Chief [ edit ]That said, the most striking feature of this gun is its woodwork, and in this respect Macnab has not let me down. The coil mainsprings run on guide rods and provide a rebounding action, so that the strikers withdraw after firing and their tips are clear of the barrels as the gun opens. Due to a misunderstanding, Lamancha accidentally blurts out to Claybody the identities of John Macnab. Claybody is confused, and says that he would gladly have made a game of it had he known that his adverseries were one of his own party leaders, a barrister he is instructing in a big case, and a banker with whom he has done a lot of business. No matter what they had done, Claybody says, he would never expose them. The action frame itself is attractively carved with raised panels to accommodate the side plates, and detonated fences.

This year we are delighted to welcome Blaser as associate sponsors of The Field’s Macnab Challenge. The Highlander Deluxe is the machine engraved version of this duo, which lowers the price considerably, but does not detract from the looks of the gun.Andrew Greig's novel The Return of John Macnab brings Buchan's Corinthian view bang up to date, with three friends deciding to revive the poacher's challenge in a manner appropriate for the end of the twentieth century. The three challengers are of a very different cast from Buchan's trio. Neil Lindores is the analogue for Sir Edward Leithen, the intellectual power house (- yes, a quiet Buchanesque pun for the cognoscenti) and emotional touchstone of the new trio, and perhaps bears the closest resemblance to a Buchan character. He is partnered with Alasdair Sutherland, a former Special Services operative, and Murray, a would-be political activist who has gradually lost his fire as family responsibilities exert their force. This is to be the last major prank for the three of them before middle age take its toll. It is a sporter which, at a pinch, could also serve as a field-shooting gun as long as not too much walking was involved. It would be OK in a pigeon hide, and 3in chambers add to its adaptability, although its proof does not allow the use of very heavy steel loads. In addition to a foresight, the top rib is fitted with a small, brass mid-sight bead – something you don’t use much on a sporter, but its presence does no harm and can be handy if you wish to shoot the occasional round of trap. Sporting Gun tested the Highlander in March 2004. Build quality, value for money and handling scored seven out of 10, and styling eight. The tester found the gun well-balanced, and liked the colour hardening. The trigger, adjustable for reach and weight, also drew praise. Some concern was expressed because the gun was, then, so new in a sector of the market in which there is strong competition from better-known manufacturers. Since then it has enjoyed some competition success at all levels, and seems to have been well accepted. a b Casely, Gordon (30 January 2013). "James Macnab of Macnab". Herald Scotland . The Macnab Challenge has its roots in the 1925 novel John Macnab by John Buchan. The story follows three protagonists: Sir Edward Leithen, John Palliser-Yeates and Lord Lamancha, all desperate to relieve the ennui that has engulfed them. The solution can only be something devilish, with a dash of daring. Under the mantle of John Macnab, they issue a warning to three Highland estates: within 48 hours they will remove a salmon or stag, undetected, and present it at the door of the house. On this, they stake their reputations and the danger proves innervating. The main feature of this gun is its hand engraving which not only makes it a little more expensive than the Deluxe version, but also gives it an air of individuality. Stewart, David of Garth (1822). Sketches of the character, manners, and present state of the Highlanders of Scotland: with details of the military service of the Highland regiments. Edinburgh and London: A. Constable and Longman, Hurst. p. 370. Although not written in prose quite as beautiful as Buchan's, Greig's novel stands as a rattling good read in its own right, and a powerful act of homage to the earlier work. I rather fancy that, given suitably sympathetic treatment, they might both make enchanting films.Kirsty and Neil do seem real characters with an interesting hinterland (perhaps based on people known to the author or his own experience). However, most of the other characters are either stereotypes (Murray), implausible (Alasdair and Jane and their unconvincing reunion on the moors), or politically correct (the lesbian Shonagh and the Arab Aziz). And does he need to harp on so obsessively about Buchan’s praise of boys and small-breasted women? From John Macnab Ltd., Unit 6, Cropper Row, Haigh Industrial Estate, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
