About this deal

What you need to know going in is that there are a handful of twists, and each one comes in a different way. Recently, I was reading a book, Daemon Voices, a collection of essays about storytelling by my favorite author, Philip Pullman. But she surprises Casey by regaining consciousness and a budding friendship is born from gratitude, on Katherine's part, as well as an immediate camaraderie punctuated by crisp, humorous dialogue. Did the author intend this to be a serious thriller or is it a campy homage to certain books/movies (that would be spoilers if I named them all)?

I think it’s because the reader knows at the outset that Casey’s husband recently passed away, so she’s just processing her grief. A new Sager book is something to look forward to every summer, and while I hope next year’s is not quite so bonkers, I’ll definitely be reading it. To prove it to myself, I set the bourbon down, keeping my hand close to the glass but not touching it.Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of liquor, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple who live in the house across the lake. And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name. With his trademark blend of sharp characters, psychological suspense and gasp-worthy twists, The House Across the Lake will shock readers from the first page to the last. And, as the ice queen, Hillary Brooke is reliably chilly, using her posh accent and supercilious manner to make clear her distance from the pathetic peons by whom she's surrounded.

An American pulp novelist, Mark Kendrick (Nicol), meets his rich neighbours across the lake and is soon seduced by beautiful blonde Carol (Brooke), the wife of Beverly Forrest (James), despite Beverly treating him as a friend. And yes, Sager eventually demonstrates there is indeed "a lot more going on," with an inventive, mind-bending, and cohesive twist that readers will not anticipate. As she slowly rebuilds her life, she feels more confident in herself and her ability to handle whatever comes next. If you're like me you don't expect much from Riley Sager, so when I was sent this book for review I was eager to jump right in.
