About this deal

To that end AMD's got its 3D V-cache Performance Optimizer and PPM Provisioning File drivers in its latest chipset software package. It offers extra performance vs keeping highly utilised cores to one CCD, which is what happens to those poor folks using Process Lasso. When one of these chips hits its max safe operating temperature, it doesn't crash but instead throttles the thermals back to prevent the CPU from being damaged. Cache has been an essential and highly influential part of computers for decades now, and its importance is unquestionable.

He built his first gaming PC at the tender age of 16, and finally finished bug-fixing the Cyrix-based system around a year later. And how bad is the latency penalty hoping from one CCD to another for such games needing more than 8 cores. You'll find fare more in-depth productivity and gaming benchmarks on the following pages, including with multiple overclocked configurations of all the chips you see here. It’s also noteworthy that Game Mode has a history of sometimes unnecessarily throttling background tasks on higher-end systems that don’t need as much resource preservation. A corresponding reduction in thermal design power (TDP) rating also occurred, with the Ryzen 9 7950X having a 170-watt (W) TDP and the Ryzen 9 7950X3D having a 120W TDP. Unlike the last-gen's Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the 7950X3D does allow for some narrow, controlled overclocking through AMD's Ryzen Master utility, but we're talking about presets rather than setting specific voltages, something you won't be able to do with this chip. Even with the non-3D V-Cache variant of AMD's flagship processor, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, you were getting a seriously powerful chip that made a worthy rival for the i9-13900K, but the extra gaming performance that 3D V-Cache brings to the table is something to see in action, and it really is AMD's not-so-secret weapon here — especially if you're playing esports titles at 1080p where the speed of the processor is far more important than having the best graphics card.

You can read the finer-grained details of the second-gen 3D V-Cache technology and the 6nm I/O Die (IOD) on the following page. WIth CPU sets I recommend setting up some rules under Options > CPU > CPU Sets inside Project Lasso. In fact, the 7950X3D’s maximum supported temperature is 89C, which is lower than the 7950X’s limit of 95C and the previous gen 5800X3D’s 90C limit.

Testing a processor is arguably one of the most involved processes of any component I review because there are so many things to measure and quantify. The optimizer and provisioning drivers only kick in for dual-CCD Zen 4 X3D processors, so they won’t impact performance with regular chips. The other difference in terms of those dies is that not every core has access to this additional V-Cache.

This latter comparison is the most fascinating since it shows very clearly how much that extra cache memory alone can impact performance.

People that advocate for apps like Process Lasso often think this is a bug and it hurts performance, it doesn't, It helps performance. AMD touts the Ryzen 9 7950X3D as a superior gaming processor, and it does show some modest frame-rate advantages at lower resolutions in some games, but it's no slam-dunk across all titles. Thanks to my extensive computer science background, I have a very clear sense of what is happening inside of a processor and how it is supposed to respond and perform, as well as which tools are best suited to measure these kinds of metrics since this is what I have been doing for nearly a decade now in one form or another. AMD’s new 16-core 7950X3D is the first 3D V-Cache chip to employ two compute chiplets, boosting productivity apps and enabling a higher boost frequency of 5. As far as the chip itself, there isn't a whole lot of difference between this processor and its non-3D sibling in terms of architecture, so if you want more of a deep dive into AMD Zen 4, definitely check out my AMD Ryzen 9 7950X review for further info.Few other games have better minimums with > 8 core also, for those of us that like to run common background applications while gaming (discord, youtube, spotify etc). I'm not too familiar with that app to be honest, but I can try it out myself if you can give me a link and some brief instructions on what to do. I've tested Windows 10 vs 11, and 11 is clearly faster in gaming so if you are on 10 take this into consideration. I run ECO 65W as I don’t need maximum all core frequency, but it is nice to have the extra cores as I normally have a few VM’s running when working. You are good to go, no further efforts required and no messing about with third party apps like Process Lasso unless you want more control, more on this below.
