About this deal
Saying that strange things are afoot at the offices of The Stranger Times is a bit like telling someone that the Pope is a Catholic but bear with me because they are weird even by Banecroftian standards. With Banecroft distracted, the shock resignation of assistant editor, Hannah Willis, couldn’t have come at a worse time. In this book we pick up a short time after the events of Book 2 - and things have taken a bit of a turn at the paper. And as this is the culmination of one of the series’ overarching plot threads, you need to know about Banecroft, his wife and Simon Brush.
The world of Stranger Times got expanded, we have the big bads set up, the sides in a huge magical conflict. Hannah leaves The Stranger Times to do some investigation on a wellness retreat/cult, meanwhile a previous contributor of the paper disappears without a trace. I'm not sure if you'd be able to read this as a stand alone but I would seriously recommend reading The Stranger Times and This Charming Man anyway. This did make it pretty hard to get into for me but once over the initial hump the story picked up and it's good fun. I found the scattering of the characters a little bit more of a problem – and Grace’s professional meltdown was plain annoying.
In addition I really enjoy how the different volumes of this series tie into each other, picking up old characters, develop the main characters and introduce new ones, while also being good stories on their own. There is a new assistant editor to replace Hannah who to Banecroft's disgust has been given the job by the owner over his head. Not himself, his behaviour causes a major upset in the office and, when a new assistant editor arrives on the scene, it’s clear to all that something is very amiss.
In this time of crisis, is her decision to swan off to a fancy new-age retreat run by a celebrity cult really the best thing for anyone? The opening chapters show us a Banecroft in even worse shape than before, and his odd behaviour has only gotten worse. I was delighted to see that there is a multi-part Stranger Times series in development so get in early folks and catch up on your reading first. It remains just as strong, maybe even stronger, after the conclusion of this book, the third in the series.
