About this deal

Cologne was an absolute hit among Turkish people because of its pleasant smell and refreshing effect. Thus, in Muslim history and within Islamic or Prophetic Medicine, scents are endowed with great significance, with good scents being considered media of protection and of divine presence. During the so-called Golden Age of Islam, scholars and physicians such as Ali Rabban at-Tabarī (fl. ca. 805–870 AD), al-Kindī (801–873 AD), al-Masʿūdī (fl. ca. 895–957 AD) and al-Zahrāwī (936–1013 AD), being expected “to have knowledge on the preparation of perfumes” (King Citation2017, 5), ascribed healing powers to particular scents. In his fourteenth-century treatise of prophetic medicine, the theologian and physician Ibn Quayyim al-Jawziyya (1292–1350 AD) lists several scents—including musk, aloe wood, ambergris, and frankincense—as medical substances, stating that perfume (Arab., t.īb) preserves the health, because “it makes the heart rejoice, pleases the soul and revitalizes the spirit” (Ibn Quayyim al-Jawziyya Citation1998, 199). Scents are more generally regarded highly as among the “beloved things” of the Prophet, also functioning as demonifuge according to Ibn Quayyim due to the fact that “[g]ood spirits love a beautiful scent, while evil spirits like an evil smell” (ibid., 200). The kolonya as we know it has been prevalent in Turkey since the Ottoman Empire and the reign of Abdülhamit II. While kolonya gets its name from the German town of Cologne, it’s usage in Turkish culture has always been quite unique. Though it may seem to simply be a personal care product due to its aromatics, it is so much more to the Turks who have historically also used it as a sterilizing agent and antiseptic and regularly as a medicinal product that is even dribbled on sugar cubes to aid in digestion. In practice, it is drizzled onto the hands of guests upon entering a home or restaurant, or after finishing a meal. It is offered to customers as they enter shops and especially barbershops. Even on long-distance buses in Turkey, every single person seated is given a drizzle of the ever-so-refreshing kolonya to wipe their hands and face.Hürriyet. 2020e. “Almanya’da Türk kolonyasında talep patlaması yaşanıyor [In Germany, growing demand for Turkish cologne].” March 18.
