A Tip About Spare Tyre: It is common for people to forget about the spare tyre unless they experience a flat-tyre situation. To avoid this, try considering that your car has five tyres instead of four. This way you will attend to the spare tyre when you visit the technician for maintenance.

The increasing loss of pressure will eventually affect your car’s handling and safety before your tyre becomes completely flat. Slow puncture repair Simply attach the hose to your wheel and the pump will do the rest. Most will even deflate a tyre if it detects it’s at a higher pressure than the user has set. A foot pump is a low-tech (and very slow) alternative, but is a handy tool for inflating tyres at home. Air pumps at fuel stations are often more complex than the ones you might have at home, and many come with +/- buttons that enable you to set the pressure as needed.

Do gather the necessary tools: Before you begin, make sure you have all the required tools readily available. Having tyre irons, a valve core tool, a bead breaker, lubricant (such as soapy water or tyre mounting paste), and an air compressor or hand pump on hand will make the process smoother and more efficient. Either way, you’ll need to pull over and stop as soon as possible. Do so somewhere safe if you can, such as a lay-by or side street. Try to avoid stopping on a busy, fast or poorly sighted road. Spare wheels supplied with cars are typically ‘space savers’ – narrower than normal and with a low speed rating, which will normally be marked on the wheel rim (typically 50mph). These tyres are only designed for emergency use, and won’t provide the braking or grip that a normal tyre will.Use the valve as a starting point when looking for the source of the puncture. That way you will have a point of reference to return to. Simon Bromley/Immediate Media Excessive vibration: If you experience excessive vibration while driving, it could be an indication of an out-of-balance or damaged tyre. LifeSearch Partners Limited (FRN 656479), for the introduction of Pure Protection Contracts, who are authorised and regulated by the FCA to provide advice and arrange Pure Protection Contracts. With the fixings removed, you should now be able to remove the wheel with the puncture and replace it with your spare. Be careful – a car wheel is normally quite heavy.

Slide the spare wheel onto the protruding hub bolts, or in line with the wheel nut slots (warning: it’s heavy to lift it off the ground to do this). The puncture-fixing brigade is divided into two distinct camps: those that insist on using an old-school, glue-on patch kit and those that prefer pre-glued patches.
