About this deal

In March 2008, on the prospect of a Mansun reunion, Draper stated that whilst he and Andie Rathbone were interested, "Dominic Chad would never do it, so it can't happen". [25] In 2010, Rathbone commented that it was a "pity the three others couldn't stop dramatising the problems and get out again, as we'd be phenomenal". [56] In 2011 Rathbone again confirmed his and Draper's desire to reform the band, but added that a reunion would have to include all four band members and that neither King nor Chad were interested. Mansun were different though, an interesting and intriguing proposition often described as prog-indie. The prog it was cool to like, music made by young people for young people and with an attitude, dark sense of humour and intelligence. In the same vein as prog, the album could be described as a concept album telling the sordid tales of life in a bizarre small town as observed by the Grey Lantern of the title. The album title came from Drapers alter-ego stage character, created to overcome his often crippling anxiety and shyness. Draper has been quoted before as having been criticised for coming across as overtly arrogant, the real reason being his social anxiety. Millar, Mark (12 September 2015). I’d played the record companies a lot of the songs I had accumulated over the years and I was asked to write a new one and go in to the studio and record it in a day to see if we had what it took to make it. This was the song that we recorded. I was planning ahead and already had the idea of a skit on a concept record already written down, this song does what it says on the tin and describes a particularly debauched night in the life of the characters on the record.”

An article in The Guardian on 24 December 2011, entitled "The Guide's guide to the next 12 months", claimed that the band were set to reunite in 2012 with a new album planned, [63] but was later denied by official sources and confirmed to be a mistake by the article's author.

Mansun's third studio album, Little Kix (early working titles included Magnetic Poetry and The Trouble With Relationships, [32]) saw Draper and Chad decamp to the south of Spain in March 1999 where they wrote and demo'd ideas for the album. Draper claimed that following the commercial and critical disappointment of Six, he didn't feel any pressure to follow it up and therefore set out to go in a different direction with the new album. Prior to the writing trip in Spain, he had decided that the new album would be more "acoustic-guitary" [33] and wanted to prove to himself that he could still write pop songs with choruses. [34] The album was recorded at Astoria, a houseboat-studio owned by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, with former XTC and Police producer Hugh Padgham, MANSUN.NET Features - Q Interview". 19 October 2002. Despite initially admitting that the album was "all about 'What do you want out of your life, what do you want out of a relationship?' And I didn't want to make another disillusioned, really dark record", [35] and that "anyone who gets Little Kix knows it's a good album" [36] Draper refused to tour or promote the album. [25] " I Can Only Disappoint U" gave the band their biggest selling single to date and second highest charting single after " Legacy", but Draper's refusal to promote the album led to the album stalling at #14 in the charts. [37] He later admitted that whilst they were trying to make a "timeless record", he "just don't think we realised the record we were making until towards the end" [29] and Chad also later stated that the album "just didn't sound like us because there was lots of keyboards". One other key advantage that Mansun has is the man behind the microphone, Paul Draper, who has a voice that can seemingly adapt to anything that the album calls of him. From the earnest vocals of "Mansun's Only Love Song" to the snark of "Stripper Vicar", he manages to sell the goal of the song wonderfully, as well as giving some real force to the albums excellent hooks. Other than the prog reference, due to the diverse range of music styles and the bands hard to pin-down image it was difficult to categorise or pigeon-hole them. One of the reasons I was first drawn to the band. Right from the outset, you are drawn in by The Chad Who Loved Me’s lush and sweeping orchestral introduction all the way through to the epic closer Dark Mavis/An Open Letter to the Lyrical Trainspotter which, tongue firmly in cheek, dismisses the lyrics of the album –”The lyrics aren’t supposed to mean that much, They’re just a vehicle for a lovely voice, They aren’t supposed to mean that much” Seraphim News And Views - MansunMusicLovers".
