Once Ableton Link has been enabled, an orange link icon will be shown in the top right of the toolbar providing the number of linked devices, sync lead tempo, and phase meter showing the current beat position. When synced, the tempo will match the tempo of the longest playing device. The lead tempo can be adjusted from any device and all other linked devices will automatically follow.

Dedicated beat jump controls taken from the SC5000 range of players are a much-welcomed feature. The Auto Loop knob does it’s job fine but it’s a little small and we prefer the dedicated buttons found on the Pioneer range of players. It’s not a deal-breaker but the buttons run no risk of adjusting the loop length as you push them in to activate, unlike this knob.

The streaming partners are enough to be able to take care of any requests, current and commercial, through to B-Side obscurities. For owners of the existing model, an upgrade to PRIME 4+ is definitely worth considering for the awesome new stems feature! However, the Engine update does give the original PRIME nearly all of the new abilities. A testament to the durability and longevity of both! There is more: Some may feel the jogs are too small; others still may say it needs more powerful music management, especially if a DJ wishes to keep all of their music on the unit on a SATA drive and try and stay away from the laptop as much as possible. One of its biggest assets is its ability to fully analyse music, so there is no need for a computer. Only down side, Engine Prime is a bit of a pain to analyse a very large music collection that a mobile DJ has, its definitely not the laptop used to run engine prime on, as said laptop is a very high spec gaming laptop costing over 3k Overall, in this area, there is a learning curve – possibly inevitable when you ditch a powerful operating system and decade-old DJ software and try and do it all standalone. Is this the end for laptop DJing?
