About this deal

After reading our word mat students may want to learn more about the vocabulary they've read if so our PowerPoint is perfect to learn all about Lighthouses. This six-lesson instructions Year 2 planning pack provides everything you need to deliver these fun and engaging lessons, including detailed lesson plans, slideshows for the teaching inputs, differentiated activities and a range of printable teaching resources. It's not really the type of story that I would have enjoyed, and I don't think my child-self would have either. An attractive cover opens to 31 good quality, shiny pages, in double-page spread format (bar the last) with colourful illustrations throughout.

I have so many fond memories of my Dad reading this to me and I was forever captivated by the beautiful illustrations and the witty storyline. The illustrations are a little cheesy but would be humorous for the adult reading to a child (or for an assignment).Everything you need to teach this exciting lesson is included in the pack including a detailed lesson plan, the engaging slideshow and all the printable resources and word banks you will need. Every day, Mr Grinling visits his lighthouse and polishes his light to make sure it shines brightly. It also provides an introduction to jobs and safety at sea, which could lead to a theme, sharing of children's own experiences or even a school trip. I find the dialogue between the seagulls amusing, especially when they tease Hamish (Hamish isn’t the threat to the seagulls that Mrs Grinling hopes he will be! I experienced a teacher using this with a reception class for a whole term topic which worked really well and the children loved it.

They try lots of ways to stop them but nothing works, they discover that the way to solve this is to send down mustard sandwiches which the seagulls hate and then leave Mr Grinling to his lunch. Its is decided that Hamish, the Grinlings’ cat, will accompany the lunch, but he becomes seasick and the seagulls, unthreatened by him, still have a feast. Not only is Hamish the cat trapped inside, he also needs to switch on the light to warn the ships that they're near the rocks on the coast. They will perform their cookery shows at the end of the lesson, trying hard to include a range of time adverbials and imperative verbs. Mr and Mrs Grinling are throwing a fancy-dress party to celebrate the lighthouse's 200th birthday and everyone is invited.

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch was first published in 1977 so it has been read by several generations of children (I was probably one of the first! Authors / Illustrators I find it really interesting to hear what authors and illustrators enjoy reading or have enjoyed reading with children. They will use the success criteria for good instructions to evaluate their own and each others' writing. In this lesson, inspired by 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', children will imagine the mustard that Mrs Grinling used to fend off those pesky seagulls has run out! Nicola studied Drama and English Literature at Royal Holloway and trained at Birmingham School of Acting.

The Story: Every day Mr Grinling, the lighthouse keeper, rows out to his lighthouse to clean the light.

Both Mr and Mrs Grinling try various ways to assure the safe arrival of the lunch but the seagulls are always one step ahead. By the end of the lesson, your Year 2 class will have developed a checklist of key features to refer to when writing their own instructions. At the end of the lesson, children will move around the classroom and read each other's instructions.

The three in this story, Tom, Fred and Bert think that 'the lunch is scrumptious', that Mrs Grinling is 'a great cook' and that 'the peach surprise, in particular, is excellent'! That is until some well-named gulls see an opportunity for a free meal and begin to hijack the parcel. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.

Catherine Chapman’s designs – flowers, snow, carrots, russet leaves, and more – underpin the seasonal progression, once Tortoise has emerged from hibernation and we await the famous race. The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch by Rhonda Armitage is a classic KS1 tale for any class covering a seaside topic.
