About this deal

Emptying the bin is simple – you just push down a lever with one hand and the dust cup cap opens at an angle to let the contents fall into your bin. It took us a few attempts to make sure the opening of the dust cup was right over our bin, but because the action is quite fast the dust cloud is minimal.

The first thing we noticed is just how loud this vacuum cleaner is. In its standard cleaning mode with the floor head on it hit 82 decibels – the average vacuum cleaner is around 75 decibels. And when you use the Boost mode the volume increases even more, so this is worth bearing in mind if you prefer a quieter model. While 650g sounds quite heavy for a small handheld vacuum, the WandVac has a nice balance to it. The heaviest individual component is the 260g battery, and because that sits in the handle, it isn’t too tiring to wield. The vacuum engine sits in the centre of the WandVac’s cylindrical body, leaving the end relatively light and easy to keep under control. With the WandVac’s turbo mode engaged, I measured the suction on the Shark WandVac 2.0 at 16kPa, which is good for such a small device. It isn’t quite as powerful as the Hoover H-Handy 700 Express but it comes a very close second, and has more power behind it than most handheld vacuums we’ve tested. Shark states that the WV361UK has a 16-minute run-time, although this is without the motorised floor brush. Attach a motorised tool and battery life is closer to 12 minutes. On Boost mode, you’ll get less than 10 minutes. We tested the Shark WandVac thoroughly to see how it performed across a variety of tasks, including cleaning up food debris and also finer dirt and dust. We put the battery to the test to see if it lived up to the promised run time.

Need a powerful handheld vacuum? The Shark WandVac could be ideal

I found this vacuum cleaner quite noisy, peaking at 81.9dB on ION mode and 82.3dB on Boost mode. That’s a bit louder than most regular cordless cleaners, although the high-pitched motor here isn’t particularly annoying. Conclusion To convert the WandVac to a handheld vacuum, all you have to do is remove the wand and floor head and you’re good to go. If you’re cleaning your car or other awkward spaces, a crevice tool is included, and there’s also a fluffy brush head that’s ideal for cleaning blinds or delicate surfaces. The best results were to be found with pet hair. Here, the vacuum happily collected all of the loose dog hair we dropped on the floor, even using the basic upholstery tool on carpet. I suspect it would find ingrained pet hair a tougher challenge, though, without a motorised attachment. We found the Shark WandVac was very light and easy to use with the crevice tool attached, and the suction was strong enough to provide a thorough clean, making it ideal for awkward jobs like cleaning your car or stairs. Like all the best Shark vacuum cleaners, the Shark WandVac 2-in-1’s floorhead features Anti Hair Wrap technology that actively works to remove hair from the brush-roll. It keeps the inner workings tangle-free and works well on all hair lengths, and pet and human hair.

When you attach the floor head the cleaning time is reduced, which Shark does state, and we found that the battery only lasted 12.5 minutes, without us using the Boost mode. For us, that wasn’t really long enough to clean the entire home from top to bottom; however, that’s not what the WandVac is designed for. If you need a whole-home cleaner, consider something like the Dyson V15 Detect instead, which offers a run-time of up to 60 minutes. The dust canister capacity on this Shark vacuum is just 0.25qts / 0.25 liters, which when you compare it to the Dyson V11 Absolute which has a 0.2-gal / 0.76-liter bin, is very small, although it’s worth noting that handheld vacuums tend to have smaller bin capacities because they’re not designed for cleaning your entire home. Our flour test followed a similar pattern, although more flour was drawn into the collection bin before the vacuum clogged up. Again, this wouldn’t be my vacuum of choice for such a dramatic spill but it performed better here than with Cheerios.Unlike its predecessor, the Shark WandVac 2.0 has two power settings. The standard setting is engaged by switching it on with the thumb-operated power button, and there’s a second button below that for boosting the power.

There’s no point in having a lightweight vacuum cleaner if it doesn’t have the cleaning performance of a larger model. Starting out, I measured the cleaner’s power in AirWatts (AW), which is a measurement of suction power and airflow combined.

The Shark WandVac 2.0 looks good and cleans well but is at its best with smaller spillages

To turn the Shark WandVac 2-in-1 into a handheld vacuum, all you have to do is remove the wand with one-touch. Now with just the wand, it weighs under 1kg and can easily clean worktops, sofas, car interiors, stairs and more. At the end of the wand, you can attach the Crevice tool and Multi-Surface tool for more versatile cleaning. On the standard ION mode, the cleaner came in at 62.78AW, which is around average for a cordless vacuum cleaner in regular power mode. With Boost mode, I measured the vacuum at 124.65AW, which is around the same as the larger Shark IZ251UK. That’s impressive going. Once the collection bin and the suction tubes were rammed full, there was no chance of it collecting any more, hence the poor showing on our cleaning chart. The WandVac 2.0 performs well but it’s best used on smaller spillages.

The attachments aren’t powered so they don’t add much to the overall weight of the device, either. And they slide on and off the end of the vacuum, so there’s nothing fiddly about putting them on or taking them off again.
