About this deal

La Sportiva's footwear seems to often be described as narrow (I found this true of their mountaineering boots, for which I go with Scarpa instead) but the Wildcat is described as medium/wide and fits me well and the TX series is also described as wide. I’m sure this performance fit is great for certain endeavors, but has definitely left me wishing for a little more width and volume on longer days. Foot support is important when carrying heavy loads, but even a "rope, rack, and the shirt on your back" weighs a fair bit.

I think the Cruzer might feel a hair stickier, but I think that is primarily due to it’s very thin and flexible midsole and outsole — you can use much more of the surface area of its outsole because of how flexible it is. Armed with the information we've provided, you should feel confident to start your journey toward finding the perfect pair of approach shoes for your next objective or for your lifestyle. The other reason I’ve started to reach for the TX3 almost exclusively is the padding in the midsole. The Enertor Performance are after-market insoles purchased separately, and provide substantially more support and cushion than standard insoles. The TX2 is a touch shorter and has a lower-volume toe box, and at least for me, I think the TX3’s wider toe box allows my toes to splay more and grip the rock better. With a slightly softer, more high-volume build and sharp tread instead of the Sportiva and Five Ten’s dotty rubber, the Crux offers more comfort while hiking and better traction on soft terrain such as mud, soggy leaves, and snow.

I’d want it supremely breathable, reasonably armored against abusive terrain, and to have an outsole that grips any surface. Since the flatirons here champion smearing, the TX 3 may just work well enough for me at the moment. Not only are they useless in terms of quality — my first ones broke within an hour of use — but they are also quite short. I've had these since August 2019 and have warn them a lot for walks around the neighborhood and some light hiking.

La Sportiva makes several approach shoes, and their TX3 seems to fall right in the middle of the spectrum of hiking and climbing. The upper on the La Sportiva TX Guide is constructed using a thick jacquard ultra-weave that provides phenomenal support and protection. Our only notable complaint is that the streamlined toe box is fairly narrow and can feel prohibitive after long days on the trail (when feet tend to swell), but otherwise it’s an impressive all-around performer and a great match for demanding alpine missions that involve a mix of terrain.

I’ve been really interested in the new TX Guide since seeing them at OR, but even just holding the display shoe in my hand, I knew right away it was going to be too narrow for my foot. That said, the TX4 is the shoe we want to be wearing while schlepping heavy loads to the base of El Cap, standing in aiders, performing occasional free climbing moves, and carrying the whole kit back down to the meadow. We covered our experiences with the TX3 above, and the TX lineup includes a number of other variations. I want something lightweight but that matches what I need for both everyday use but when out on mountain days.Although it lacks ankle support, the wide foot bed and supportive outsole make a solid platform underfoot. The midsole contains very little padding, so long hikes aren't as comfortable in the TX2 Evo as they are in the TX4. Three years after I first published this review, the TX3 remain one of my favorite hiking shoes, especially for long days in hot, dry weather. I reviewed the TX3 a few years ago and loved it, but the shoe left we wishing for a little more cushion underfoot. This is my go-to shoe for technical hikes, heavy packs, and slower days, so the added weight isn’t felt in the same way it would be for a trail runner.

With a mesh-constructed upper, the TX3 Women’s approach shoe is designed for breathability and comfort over rough terrain. The TX3 is a solid all-arounder, merging exceptional comfort with both climbing and hiking performance. All else being equal, a more supportive shoe will edge and crack climb better, especially when carrying a heavy pack. The TX3 is an all-synthetic sticky rubber machine that will get you wherever you want to go in the mountains. That shoe jumped to the top of my list after several dayhikes, including a 16-hour, August ultra-hike of the 32-mile, 10,000-vertical-foot, nine-summit Pemi Loop in New Hampshire’s rocky and wet White Mountains, and a 27-mile, 16-hour traverse of western Maine’s Mahoosuc Range.
