Continue following the Limestone Way, through a small wooded area, then out on the road. Derbyshire has four distinct regions: The Dark Peak, upland country formed by the silt from great rivers; the White Peak, an underlying layer of limestone formed when Derbyshire was beneath a tropical sea; the Northeast Derbyshire coalfields; and the clay and sandstone plains of the Trent. It is these contrasts of landscape that makes Derbyshire such a fine place for walking, whether it's a mammoth mountain hike, or just a stroll through the woods. A 205 mile-long (330km) National Trail running through the Pennine hills from Middleton in Derbyshire to Ravenstonedale in Cumbria designed especially for use by horse-riders and cyclists but open to walkers. A 60 mile walk designed by the New Mills Group to celebrate the RA Diamond Jubilee. The landscape varies from farmland and river valleys to bleak exposed moorland in the High Peak country, circuiting Glossop and taking in Castleton, Buxton and New Mills, with a number of steep ascents. A guide is available from the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA).You’ll then walk through another four fields, across stone stiles, before reaching a wooden gate that crosses the road. The Monsal Head Hotel Stable Bar serves a wide variety of bar meals. In Ashford, the Bull's Head is a popular choice for real ale and after-walk pub meals. At the footpath, turn left, then after 700 metres, you’ll reach the road with the signpost to Robin Hood’s Stride (at the end of stage 4).Find Derbyshire walks from the list below which features the best walking routes in the area. Most of routes are circular walks although there are a few linear hikes. The walks are listed from the shortest and easiest to the longest more challenging routes. The walks are divided into sub areas so you can find specific walks. The route is fairly well signposted when you are on the Limestone Way but less so in other parts, although there are public footpath signs. I would always recommend you take a map and compass (see below). Peak District weather Walk across the next three fields, over stiles, with Bleakley Plantation on your left. You’ll reach a fingerpost signposted Public Footpath (in three directions) and Youlgreave. Keep walking in a north-easterly direction (signposted Public Footpath). As you reach the beginning of Bradford Dale on your walk, look out for the unique books in the wall, next to the old sheep dips! If you read from top to bottom, you can read jabout them. Beginning of Bradford Dale There are some steep drops from the cliffsnear Robin Hood’s Stride so please be careful, especially if you’re doing the walk with children.

Walking highlights - Dramatic Dovedale and its sister dales are typical of the White Peak with limestone outcrops a character of the landscape. The Manifold Valley, lying to the west of Dovedale, also has much to offer walkers including Thor's Cave perched high on the valley side. Between the Dove and Manifold valleys lies high ground, including Ecton Hill and the villages of Alstonefield and Wetton which provide a good base for Peak District walks in this area. However, if you want to take a step up from this level, below is a selection of walks that do involve the passing of gates and stiles and at some points, on undulating or uneven terrain, but are generally fairly untaxing.Walking highlights - the Great Ridge at Castleton linking Mam Tor with Lose Hill is one the great walks of the Peak District. Other attractions include Winnats Pass, Peveril Castle and Rushup Edge. An excellent for Peak District walks and very popular in good weather.

Follow the trail through the next five fields, then onto to flagstones to a mini bridge across Bleakey Dike. Head up the flagstones on the other side and across the field. You’ll spot a random stile in the middle of the field! The onward path heads downriver, more or less beside the Wye. Eventually, at a path junction continue towards 'A6 and White Lodge', crossing a stream and stile, then up to the A6. Where to stay - Edale, Castleton and Hayfield are convenient for this area. Map - Dovedale Manifold Valley This guidebook describes 35 circular walking routes in the Dark Peak - the wilder northern area of the Peak District distinguished by its dark gritstone. The walks range between 4 and 13.5 miles in length (6.5km to 22km), varying in terms of difficulty: some involve steep ascents and descents, uneven ground and pathless terrain, and demand a good level of navigational competence. The book also outlines 5 longer routes (3 linear; 2 circular) of 15.5 to 28 miles (25-45km) for those wishing to explore the area further, including a classic 'skyline' circuit of the Kinder Scout plateau. Detailed route description and 1:50,000 OS mapping are provided for each route, along with information on nearby points of interest and facilities. The path takes you through a stone stile and the driveway of the house next to the trail, and out the other side through a small gate into a field.
