About this deal

Having always loved the etymology of words and the evolution of languages, I went into this thinking I'd adore the basic pull through the story, even if the overall threads were a bit loose.

Her invisible, unheard, unnoticed place was beneath the sorting table where his father and a loyal team of lexicographers work on collecting words for the first Oxford Dictionary. I think it could have made more of an impact on me had some stylistic choices been made differently; that is always the way with making art, no one can create something as powerful and fully realized as this book is without making choices that won't work for everyone. Sadly, her collection of words goes no where (other than that trunk) without the help of a man in her life later in the book. Each word was taken out and the meaning of it disputed endlessly until there was agreement on its definition(s).It had taken 40 years for the first volume – the letters A and B – to be published, and now they had only gone and left out a word. Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Random House Ballantyne for my advanced copy in exchange for my always-honest review and for making me appreciate the words, yup the dirty ones too. Accompanying the wonderful class book ‘The Lost Words’, this is a set of outdoor teaching resources and links to more.

We’d take 20 names for 20 common animals and plants in the British landscape and then, through ‘spells’ that might be spoken and the beauty of painted images, we would try to summon back those plants and animals into the minds of children. Then his raven flew into my inbox, and from that moment I could only work on the raven, redrafting my images. Gifts of Light is a digital album featuring 10 tracks recorded during the Spell Songs 2022 Winter tour at Birmingham Symphony Hall and within the Hintze Hall of the Natural History Museum in 2021. Fundraising campaigns resulted in the book being donated to all schools in Scotland and Greater London, and 21 English and 3 Welsh counties. Unfortunately, Esme has no spark or personality, she plods through life collecting word slips and mourning her losses.Spell Songs multi-instrumentalist Jim Molyneux has carefully and brilliantly arranged each song for piano and voice. When the design team put my painting together with the type, I realised it needed to be much bigger, so I did another sketch - more finches, seeds blowing. I thought about all the words I’d collected from Mabel and from Lizzie and from other women: women who gutted fish or cut cloth or cleaned the ladies’ public convenience on Magdalen Street. A report by the National Trust on Natural Childhood in 2012 set out compelling evidence that a decline in childhood wellbeing and mental health and an increase in obesity rates are just some of the costs of a generational decline in having freedom outdoors.

As a result of fundraising campaigns, the book has been donated to all schools in Scotland and Greater London, and 21 English and 3 Welsh counties, plus 220 hospices in Britain, to support the health and wellbeing of adults.

Esme visits an infirmary where wounded soldiers provide yet more words for the fledgling dictionary.
