It is in many ways about the British class system, poverty and how it is no longer possible for a family to survive on one wage – the reason why Ben Foster was driven (without much persuasion, it has to be said) into the world of glamour, money and the sexual pursuits of the superrich. He is gripped in the poverty trap and we are with him all the way as he struggles to find his way out. The prose is rich and flows amazingly well, taking us with Ben and making us feel the weight of his choices. I was gripped from the opening chapter and what follows is a perfect storm of debauchery and entitlement, leading - almost inevitably - to a fall. The readers of this fascinating work, especially those who like all the British things, have to take their time and look at what is between the lines.

It’s set in contemporary times, starting in 2006 in the United Kingdom, and makes a sarcastic commentary on today’s wealthy there and pretty much everywhere. As it progressed I became more sure that that was the case, and in the end I belive it all is fiction.Even if it's not real it is something that can happen so easily though, if you get sucked into a situation it really is possible.
