About this deal

The Oscar-nominated animated feature Brother Bear comes to DVD with this feature-packed two-disc set from Disney. The supporting comedy troupe of animal goofballs (essentially a smorgasboard of ethnic stereotypes and cultural clichés, from Italian-American rams to surfer-dude bears) and the embarrassing Earth Mother chants by Phil Collins further remove us from the world of the sacred past and straight into a Disney marketeer’s cubicle. The two Moose Brothers Rutt and Tuke (played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) produce an audio commentary which will have the adults laughing out loud but the jokes will go straight over the kids' heads.

Bear Legends" (2:55) is a short but dry bunch of Native American tales featuring wall drawings and narrated by Tanana.Since 2001, we've brought you uncompromising, candid takes on the world of film, music, television, video games, theater, and more. The universal literary and cinematic theme of 'the journey' present in Brother Bear is a part that works. cropped anamorphic transfer would make more sense by filling up the 16x9 frame with additional picture instead of tiny black bars. The film's origins go back to 1994 when Disney CEO Michael Eisner, wowed by The Lion King, asked if any other films about animals were on the drawing board. Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis provide a few welcome moments of humor as a pair of Canadian moose who sound more than a little like their Strange Brew characters Bob and Doug McKenzie. When watching the movie, you'll want to see it the right way, so make sure to put in Disc 2 to watch the movie itself. This 2-disc set is loaded with bonus features--including an outrageously funny "Moose Commentary" starring Rutt and Tuke, outtakes, deleted scenes, games and more! Some may find the dim-witted banter and heavy sprinkling of "eh"s abrasive, but for me, I found it quite entertaining, for the most part. However vile and mundane Brother Bear may be, it actually demands to be seen in its original widescreen: after 20-odd minutes (precisely when Kenai turns into a bear), the film’s aspect ratio expands.I don’t know what this little gimmick has to say about how bears and humans look at the world, but you’ll be losing the effect of the transformation if you watch the “family-friendly” version. There’s an obvious contempt to Sitka’s insult that Kenai needs to connect with his totem (read: feminine side), one that’s further emphasized by Kenai’s bizarre transsexual transformation and nurturing relationship to an adorable bear cub named Koda (Jeremy Suarez).
