About this deal

After playing this color game, you’ll probably have ideas about how to modify the rules for your own specific needs. Here are some of my suggestions you could also try. The strength of Hues and Cues lies in its near universal appeal. And if people can give creative cues, all the better! MOOD When I first read about the game, my initial thought was that the game wouldn’t have long-lasting legs to stand on. A game about guessing colors? How long before that completely loses its punch? After launching his first game at New York Toy Fair, Scott Brady talks ideas, colours – and trading on the Moon.

As you may have already surmised, this is more of a guessing game than a game of strategy! Some serious game players might be put off by that. But on the plus side, this could be why people who usually don’t like playing games, enjoy this one.

Right. So when it came to the design of Hues and Cues, I actually had two goals in mind. First, I’d never seen a game that really implemented colour theory in a way I found fun. Second, with two teenagers in the house, I had a desire to find a game that would appeal to not only them and us, but also their grandparents.

Fantastic. So presumably then, at some point, you looked at Hues and Cues and thought: this idea should see the light of day… This is good enough to show people. How did that happen? To whom did you pitch it? In general, I prefer heavier games to party games but now and then a party game comes along and hooks me. Hues and Cues did this as did Telestrations, which is also from The Op. Party games kind of exist in a few different spheres. But one of the recently popular is the clue-giver and everyone else guesses style of games. Dixit is maybe the original where players try to describe the art on a card with a phrase of story. Codenames exploded onto the scene with its team-based vocabulary version. I think it appeals to a larger group of gamers than the more creative-focuses Dixit and the very dry and slow-paced Codenames. And if you like either, or both, of those games you should definitely give Hues and Cues a look.

Hues and Cues is an easy game to learn. All you are trying to do is get players to guess a specific color on the board. If they can get close to the spot, they earn points! Yes, that worked for me. My ideas for the game came to me at the oddest times. In the shower or during twilight sleep while trying to wake up in the morning. For every hour I spent actively working on the game itself, I easily had it in my head four times as much just thinking through different aspects and possibilities.

It can also be helpful to suggest a theme to follow, such as food or nature. The official rules say you can’t name anything in the room where you’re playing, but for kids in a classroom, this could be helpful. Yes. Because of my experience with colour theory, I knew everyone could describe colours using their own recollections – whether it’s comparing it to food items, their first car or their favourite Pokemon. That became the starting point. After all of the markers have been placed, the scoring rig descends from the heavens, centered around the color that was initially chosen. Players score based on how close they were to guessing the exact color, and the Cue-giver scores based on how many people were centered around their color. The cue giver reveals the color to the other players by announcing its coordinate letter and number. They will then place the scoring frame on the gameboard. You should place the scoring frame so the color for the round is in the center of the square. After choosing the color that they will use for the round, the cue giver has to try and come up with a one-word cue to describe the color they chose. The cue giver for this round chose the color H 15. They decided to give the one word cue “pig”. Is zero a valid answer?! When something comes to mind, I write it down and review it later when I have a few moments to see if there’s any validity in the thought. Other than that, I don’t have any formal creative process – or even scheduled time set aside to work on them! Hues And Cues is a party game by The Op. This is a game all about different colours – it’s like looking through a range of named paints! It’s a competitive game, where everyone’s playing against one another, trying to score the most points. But you need to help your opponents out sometimes. You’ll give out clever clues and word associations, that help both you and them!
