Jessica Winslow is the only member of law enforcement on the list, however, so her impending demise leads to a sense of hyper vigilance and determination to figure out the nexus between the group and how to stop the perp before she meets a devastating end.I found it useful reading a physical copy of the book and being able to flip to the character list whenever I needed it. I was pleased by the way things came together and the twist toward the end that I probably should have seen coming, but didn't. He himself says that this is an homage to And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, and not having read that book (or any other Christies, I know, I know), I can’t comment on this, but what I can say is that this does feel like a love letter to classic crime. She opened it, curious, and pulled out a single folded sheet of paper, and stared at a list of names. But eventually some clues come together although there are things taking place that keep us confused and on the wrong foot when trying to ferret out the murderer.

Though I began reading this in 2021, sadly I couldn’t finish it in time so I am starting off 2022 with a 1 star.If there are too many characters then I tend to get lost in the plot because I need to remember their different nuances, traits and motivations and I just get jumbled up in a soup of information. The characters are not all that important as this book is focused on the mystery of how these strangers are linked and why they are being targeted. The first murder occurs at a seaside resort in Maine, where Detective Sam Hamilton wonders about the strange list of names that the victim was holding. You have to appeal to two different audiences, those who have already read the original work and those who haven't. However, that’s not to say that they were super one dimensional or anything, I was actually impressed with how much we got a feel for their personalities in such short bursts between that many characters.

And found myself referring back to them until the characters developed more and I could keep them all straight. Once the pattern of deaths to members on the list becomes clear, the remaining list members are provided protection but that doesn't stop the murders.

If you carefully follow the narrative from the very beginning, you'll notice some not-so-subtle hints that are very revealing, even before the first murder takes place. This blog hosts a selection of articles written from 2013 to the present, mostly focusing on my book reviews, which are uploaded frequently. His books have been translated into over 30 languages, and his stories, poetry, and features have appeared in Asimov’s Science Fiction, The Atlantic Monthly, Measure, The Guardian, The Strand Magazine, and Yankee Magazine. at the very beginning of the book the author gives us a list of all the main characters (thank goodness)!

They’re a diverse group, mostly in their mid-thirties, bar the ill-fated Frank and a recent retiree by the name of Jack Radebaugh. Swanson creates a rollercoaster for readers, offering clues only to upend everything that was supposedly certain moments earlier. The Kind Worth Killing’ was incredible and I keep giving Swanson chances looking for that gold mine again. Marla has had a life-long obsession with books, reading more than 100 books per year for the last several years. Peter Swanson has an uncanny knack of writing very readable, absorbing and clever crime books, and Nine Lives, his latest is no different.Swanson honors genre traditions by arousing expectations only to subvert them—and then subvert them again. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke – until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list. It is admirable when an author pays homage to another author especially one as prolific as the Queen of Crime, Dame Agatha Christie. Thank you to William Morrow and Scene of the Crime for a widget of the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
