About this deal

I definitely think that anyone reading the book could definitely identify with the feelings the main characters go through including being left out of plans. Funny, fierce and feisty — this unputdownable adventure is a whip-smart and brutally authentic look into the complexity of female friendships, and the pressures of growing into a woman in a world that never considers them good enough for their double standards.

The novel is as insightful and candid as the author herself when addressing difficult subject matter with a trademark Irish wit. I really enjoy and admire Sophie White’s work and her essay-style memoir Corpsing is truly unforgettable. I’m a first time mother myself and have been so disappointed with some of my friendships since entering this new phase so was probably looking for something I could relate to.Finally, the meat of the book: the sections that brought My Hot Friend from a 4 to a 5 star read for me. Perhaps, the most refreshing or most alarming thing is that this take on the particular challenges of being a thirtysomething woman in the 2020s is so utterly relatable. The book follows three women - Lexi the co-host of a podcast with her ride-or-die bestie, which is just about to go stratospheric, but can their friendship survive success?

Normally her WhatsApp group “the bitch herd” is hopping but she begins to worry that her friends have set up a separate group without her, and are keeping her out of their lives. I still haven't recovered from Where I end) Amanda in particular really grated on me I fell in love with Abi's housemates and their tribute band, Slip'not 😂 and being a pretty big Slipknot fan, I really enjoyed this reference 🤣I thought all the different personalities worked really well throughout the book and the interlinking stories kept me turning the pages. Sophie white has an incredible gift at approaching difficult and sensitive topics in a serious yet hilarious way. As I said I rolled my eyes because if someone is rude/mean/dismissive of me now I'd not sound a whole lot of time wondering how I could make them like me.Every relationship is complex and dynamic, showing the confusing and frustrating sides of friendships that can happen when people change or get lost. It’s impossible to say more without spoilers, so I won’t, except that you will laugh, you will cry, you will gasp, but above all, you’ll want to carry on reading and discover how life pans out for these women. White also shines a light on the true realities of early motherhood and isn’t afraid to show that it isn’t all cute insta friendly matching outfits and smiles.

Determined to make new friends, she meets Joanne, a new mother, while pretending the child she nannys is her own.All three women are in situations where they really need some support, but feel that those who they should be able to count on, they no longer can. The format of split POVs in the novel had me staying up late at night, desperate to read the next part of each protegonists' story. Fate brings Claire, Joanne and Lexi together as they navigate the knotty, joyful and occasionally toxic swamp that is female friendship. All 3 are completely loveable and once I got my head around whos-who (character names in chapter headings wouldn't go amiss!
