About this deal

This appears to be my first introduction to Lisa Lutz (although her book The Passenger sounds very familiar and it came out long before I was reviewing books, so it's entirely possible that I read it and just don't remember. 🤷‍♀️), but I must say, I was impressed! This is one of those books where I kept changing my mind on "whodunnit" and every single character's extent of involvement - my favorite kind of read!

Anyone looking for a run of the mill legal thriller won’t find it here. Yes, Cavanagh treats us to some fantastic court scenes with the legal cut, thrust and unexpected humour he is known for. But he is never shy of throwing other elements into the mix and with Carrie’s husband still on the loose and lusting for blood, we’re all set for a story that will keep you up at night, unable to sleep without finding out what happens next. One of my favourite things about The Accomplice is the choice to use the third-person, rather than tell the story from Owen or Luna’s perspective. I didn’t find their friendship or the stories surrounding either death particularly riveting and have now confirmed that this author is not a fit for me! 🥱 As always with Steve Cavanagh books, we have a roller coaster ride on the way to a thrilling conclusion. I wanted to both devour and savour this book, it was so very well done. The only element I thought didn't work quite as well was the romance, which felt a bit clichéd. But I did like very much how that ended. So, although there are some pretty frighteningly gruesome scenes to be had in the early stages, it’s always the courtroom scenes in any Eddie Flynn book that are the most riveting and this is certainly the case here. It doesn’t seem to matter how nailed down the prosecution’s case appears, Eddie always seems to be able to come up with a zinger or two to scuttle a witness’ testimony. It’s not so much the fact that he does it, it’s the way that he does it that’s so entertaining. If you are interested in reading about Nazi doctors, I highly recommend Doctors from Hell: The Horrific Account of Nazi Experiments on Humans. It is not very long, has pictures, and is written by a journalist, so it is not a very tedious nonfiction read. Otto Schramm is a fictional character, but many of the facts mentioned by the characters about Nazis in exile are true: the "ratlines" that Argentine leader Juan Peron used to help the Nazis escape Germany, the assassination of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann.......How much of a responsibility do you think writers of historical fiction have to make sure the underlying facts of their books are accurate?"

What’s this horrifying secret Luna hiding from everyone? Not actually everyone: their mutual friend-pot provider Mason already knows who she is but he keeps his mouth shut. What happens if someone learns and tells the people? Not a terrible book, just not the book for me. I'll still keep reading her books because I do enjoy her storytelling. What I loved the most about this one was that there were soooo many secrets, lies, and partial truths involving every single character. Every few chapters I changed my mind about both Luna and Owen. One minute I was sure that one or both of them had to be guilty of something, and the next minute I would completely change my mind. I was also equally compelled by the stories in both timelines, which is unusual. Lutz used an interesting technique with the POVs in that multiple POVs are used in the same chapter. It was unique, but at times I thought it was a bit clunky. My other gripes: I could have done with a few less references to puking - after the first couple of descriptions, we get the point! ugh. Also, for two people so close to each other, there seemed to be a lot of secrets that other people knew, but that they hadn't told each other - weird. I am also still a bit on the fence about the ending - for me it just didn't quite live up to the dynamics of the rest of the plot. The writing style is impeccably fascinating. Each chapter from different timelines end with semi-cliffhangers. You cannot decide which one you should read first!

Eddie has been hired for the case after the original lawyer, Otto Peltier, finds himself over his head in such a serious case. Eddie’s only rule when deciding whether to take cases is that he must be convinced the defendant is innocent. But when the rest of the country is baying for his client’s blood, convinced she is as guilty as her husband, it’s clear that this is going to be an emotional case. Well this case really puts Eddie’s skills to the test. With 2 days until the case starts Carrie skips bail. Without her testimony, there is near zero chance of getting her acquitted. But Eddie has to win this case to save a life that is dear to him. The courtroom had no natural light. A concrete box filled with loss, hate, betrayal, murder, corruption and lies. It was the great theatre of human weakness.”

Success!

Thanks to Random House Publishing - Ballantine, Netgalley and author Lisa Lutz for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinions. It’s due for publication on January 25, 2022. BFFs Luna and Owen are the quintessential examples of "ride or die" besties. It was refreshing to see an author build a strong friendship between two straight people of different sexes without it leading to... well, sex. These friendships are more common in reality than fiction would have us believe.

But now she gives us something a little more pedestrian, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. The Accomplice is just a pretty straightforward suspense story that could have been written by any number of other authors cluttering up the genre. There are murders. There are lies. There are reveals. A complimentary copy was provided by Ballantine Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I highly recommend The Accomplice to fans of intelligent espionage/spy/suspense novels that are reminiscent of books by other current and former masters of this genre, such as John LeCarre, Len Deighton, Graham Greene, Alan Furst and Olen Steinhauer. From the outside looking in, people are often curious about how close the two are. Maybe it's because people have a hard time gauging platonic relationships between a man and woman. It makes them suspicious. Luna and Owen have been best friends for over a decade. Their bond runs incredibly deep, sometimes to the detriment of others in their lives.
