About this deal

The Salomon Sense Ride 4 is, without a doubt, the best and most versatile of the Sense Ride offerings to date. An accommodating and durable upper combined with a responsive, but not-too-firm midsole, and a do-everything outsole should appeal to every runner. While I love the fast feeling of a larger drop shoe on the trail, the responsiveness delivered by the Optivibe midsole compensates with noticeable energy return.

SensiFit: SensiFit cradles the foot from the midsole to the lacing system, providing a secure, snug, and virtually customized fit all around the foot. Liz: "The flexibility of this shoe enables it to practically disappear on foot while you are running. The Sense Ride 4 provided very smooth transitions through the stride but also enough torsional rigidity to be very stable as well. I never felt like my feet, ankles, or arches had to work hard to remain stable over uneven terrain or steep climbs." Tom Caughlan is a part of the iRunFar gear review team. Tom has been testing and reviewing trail running shoes and gear for over 10 years. One shoe to rule them all, claims one happy reviewer. I agree; why buy multiple trail runners when you can buy one that does it all. So look no further for the perfect all-rounder. The Sense Ride 4 (SR4), upgraded from the Sense Ride 3 (SR3), is entirely beginner trail-runner friendly. I think I was in the minority in that I liked the Sense Ride 3. I live in the mountains of northern NM and they ran nice and held up well. I tried the Sense Ride 4 and after 50 miles I was wearing a hole in the toe box above my big toe on both feet. I returned them ang went with the Brooks Cascadia's. Have couple runs in them so far. They are okay but miss my Sense Ride 3. Any thoughts on shoes similar to the 3s?

Salomon Sense Ride 3 ( RTR Review ): The SR4 is lighter and has a more refined and breathable upper. It is worth the upgrade if your SR3 has worn out. Sam did such a great job describing the midsole for the Sense Ride 3 ( RTR Review ), I feel inclined to copy his description below:The Sense Ride 4 is everything; stylish, light, agile, firm but flexible, with impressive cushioning and support. Indeed, that Sense Ride 4 performs as you would expect from such a prodigious brand.

So why didn’t this moderately weighted, 8-millimeter drop trail shoe with great durability dominate the market? As someone who has run in every iteration of this shoe, I have my druthers, and the bottom line as to why previous iterations of the Sense Ride didn’t receive more acclaim is frankly the ride of the shoe itself. The Sense Ride 4 is comfortable, there are no hot spots, no rubbing, the upper breaths nicely, and it hugs your foot. After getting accustomed to the narrower fit of this shoe, it felt snug and stabilizing and inspired confidence by keeping my foot in place. This is a small thing, but I also like that in the fully loosened position, the shoe still fits well enough to wear around, and there’s no lace ends dragging on the ground. I found myself just loosening these after a run and lounging in them a bit rather than feeling the need to immediately take them off post-effort. Sense Ride 4 doesn’t weigh you down

The integration of OptiVibe technology in the midsole minimizes impact and increases responsiveness. This Contagrip outsole, improved from the previous model, offers excellent traction on variable terrain. Some reviewers rightly refer to this Salomon shoe as Swiss Army Knife of trail shoes, and I tend to agree. If you're after a shoe that's well equipped to handle anything from short training runs to ultra-distance races, then the Sense Ride 4 has you covered. Midsole: The Midsole in the Sense Rides is called Optivibe. Optivibe is a combination of two types of foam - one to dampen and one to propel. This was developed to reduce vibration upon foot strike aimed to decrease muscle fatigue without affecting the overall feel of the shoe. Perhaps the biggest improvement to the Salomon Sense Ride 4 is the inclusion of a full-length Optivibe midsole. Historically, Salomon shoes have provided what shoe geeks would call a “responsive ride,” which means fairly firm. Foam for road running shoes has come a long way, but these technologies haven’t necessarily carried over into trail running shoes due to the sacrifice in protection. Liz: "The Sense Ride 4 has classic Salomon cushioning. There is just enough softness for comfort, but it definitely leans on the firmer side compared to many of the other, more modern trail running shoes on the market. Runners are definitely going to get a softer underfoot feel from a HOKA, Altra, or even ASICS trail shoe. Though, runners who enjoy good ground feel and a stable ride will appreciate the reliable cushioning from these shoes."
