About this deal

Due to the hand-knit construction, the blanket should only be spot-cleaned as needed and never machine washed. Regardless of which weight you select, the blanket is designed for a throw size of 50 inches wide and 60 inches long. These dimensions make it best suited to single sleepers. The general rule of thumb is to choose a weighted blanket that is roughly 10 percent of your own body weight. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. Realistically, a blanket weighing between 5 and 12 percent of your body weight may be comfortable. The best way to determine your optimal blanket is to test out different weights. The vast majority of weighted blankets (including all those that I tested) use tiny glass beads which feel a little bit like grains of sand, maybe a little bigger than that. A couple use special weighted fabric, but arguably it doesn’t make much of a difference. The only one I specifically noticed the filler of was the Snuzi option. For the washable blankets she machine washed them as per the care instructions to see how they fared in the washing machine and how easy they were to get dry afterwards. Weighted blankets are generally considered safe for children who are at 3 years of age or older and weigh at least 50 pounds. When selecting a blanket for a child, it’s wise to follow the “10 percent rule” or err on the lower side. An excessively heavy blanket can pose an injury risk for children, even if they are 3 or older.

Simba may be best known for its rolled-up mattresses, but the brand’s sleep-promoting expertise extends far beyond what we sleep on, it seems. The Orbit weighted blanket promises “better, deeper sleep”, and we found it delivered, allowing our tester to sleep soundly throughout the night. The weighted blankets come in a range of sizes, budgets, materials and designs, so it's not a case of one size fits all. It may also help to stimulate the vagus nerve to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which signals to the body that it is time to unwind and relax. The blankets can be useful for people who struggle to relax or have problems getting to sleep.”

Our quality upcycled eco-velvet is spun and brushed into a smooth signature fabric with a luminous finish.

As the weighted blanket that proved most effective at soothing our testers to sleep and keeping them in the land of the Nod until the alarm went off in the morning, the Simba orbit weighted blanket had to be our best buy. It’s not the cheapest blanket, but the quality and design warrant the investment. As they release feel-good chemicals to your brain, most people that use them find that they help to relieve anxiety symptoms, and promote relaxation. People who generally feel claustrophobic may find weighted blankets too stifling, as well. If you tend to feel anxious in enclosed spaces or when pressure is applied to your body, then you may want to consider other methods to help wind down and fall asleep. Lastly, weighted blankets pose a suffocation risk to children younger than 3 or weighing less than 50 pounds. There have been at least two cases of children who have died after using a weighted blanket. Its Karma switch blankets come with removable covers in various colours, including indigo, olive green, peachy petal and, of course, grey. And if that’s not enough choice, the covers are reversible to offer an additional option, and they can be bought separately to give so much more choice. Karmara’s weighted blankets are also available in a wide range of weights, including 6kg, 8kg, 10kg and 12kg.
