The end of apartheid opened the cities to black people, but it didn’t create many new roles in them, so many new black entrants remained visitors, condemned to standing in endless queues as if locked in some eternal process of immigration. The location of the property is convenient for access to the Metrolink, the Market Quarter and it is within the catchment area for Altrincham boys and girls' grammar schools.

NBFA's education and advocacy efforts have been focused on civil rights, land retention, access to public and private loans, education and agricultural training, and rural economic development for black and other small farmers. Boyd has cautioned him about the discrimination he’ll face: “It’s like, ‘I’m going to teach you how to walk and talk and carry yourself and demand a certain level of respect, and so that when it does come, you can hold your ground,’” Wes says.

The country’s leftist opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters mobilized about 1,000 of its supporters to challenge the white farmers in front of the court. In 2006, Emmanuel-Jones took matters into his own hands with an Apprentice-style documentary, Young Black Farmers, where nine contestants competed for an internship.

The new USDA census data shows a small spike in the number of black farmers, from 44,609 in 2012 to 45,508 in the 2019 report, but Boyd is unimpressed. One of the people who believed the new government’s promises was Elliot Matshubeng, the son of a village chief in a homeland. In 1997, Boyd and 400 other black farmers sued the USDA in the landmark lawsuit Pigford v Glickman, which alleged that from 1981 to 1997, USDA officials ignored complaints brought to them by black farmers and that they were denied loans and other support because of rampant discrimination.

It’s absolutely not for the faint of heart (or stomach), as there are some scenes that are simply disgusting, while others nearly made me cry for how miserable they were (especially the graphic rape scenes).
