About this deal

Note: With the exception of 'Battlestar Galactica: Remastered', all the bonus featured listed below are duplicated on both the widescreen and full frame versions of the original series discs. There are no bonus materials on either the 'Galactica 1980' discs or the 35th Anniversary theatrical version disc. We’ve reviewed this series on Blu-ray previously, when it was released last year by Koch Media GmbH in Germany, which was a Region B release (see link here). Universal’s new Region A release comes in two versions: The Definitive Collection, which includes the film in anamorphic widescreen (reviewed by itself here), plus the original Battlestar Galactica TV series and its follow-up , Galactica 1980, in both the original full frame TV aspect ratio (like the German set) and also adds a remastered widescreen version too. It’s also available in The Remastered Collection set that includes the new widescreen presentation only. For purposes of this review, we’ll focus on The Definitive Collection. These include a few minor documentaries from the Season 1 DVD release, another from a special release of Razor and a few Sci-Fi Channel commissioned specials. One that they might be able to restore using BD-J functionality is the online 10 episode The Face Of The Enemy, which fleshes out the complex personality of Felix Gaeta.

Inside Battlestar Galactica: The Cylons (480i; 4:49): The cast and many of the series directors discuss working with the Cylons and the challenges they faced.Anyway, enough about this seminal show; what about the collection? If you thought you’d seen a complete series box set then think again, because this one is on a completely different level to any I’ve experience. Just for the sake of organization, I'm giving the miniseries its own little section here. However, all of this content is technically part of Season 1 on the first disc. Evolution of a Cue (SD, Disc 1, 23 minutes) – Composer Bear McCreary reveals the process on developing musical cues for the score.

Note: All of the bonus materials listed below are contained on the Original Series discs. There are no bonus materials on the 'Galactica 1980' discs. Oh boy! With over seventy hours of bonus material, you'll forgive me if I don't manage to get through it all, for example, nearly every episode has a commentary, no way I'm going to be able to listen to everyone and still get this out on time! I've split the extras into seasons rather than discs. The TV special, Razor, is presented in both its broadcast and extended versions, guess which one I advocate!A spoof type featurette hosted by composer Bear McCreary, of all the great stuff on show, this has to be the worst. Remembering 'Battlestar Galactica' (SD, 45 min.) – Ported over from the 2003 DVD release, this entertaining retrospective on the show includes comments from Glen A. Larson and members of the cast, including Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, and Hebert Jefferson, Jr. Rounding out the Definitive Collection is the edited theatrical version of the pilot episode, previously released on Blu-ray in 2013. Text based The Oracle plus an additional Battlestar Blips, which is again text based trivia information and facts.

Audio Commentary: 'Islanded in a Stream of Stars: Extended Version' (Disc 2) – Commentary with Ronald D. Moore. English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, French, Italian, Spanish (Castilian), Spanish (Latin), Brazilian, and Portuguese DTS Digital Surround 2.0 (Original Series Full Frame Episodes) Season 4.5: The Untold Story - Untold (SD, Disc 2, 2 minutes) – A television preview for season 4.5. Extended Episode: 'Islanded in a Stream of Stars' (HD, Disc 2) – The unrated extended version of this episode.Working in tandem with the above feature and again hosted by McCreary we are introduced to various musicians and the specialist instruments they play, that help to give BSG its unique sounding score and trace his cues from their very humble beginnings to the full on orchestral productions with particular emphasis on the finale score. Another extremely entertaining feature. Deleted Scenes (SD, 25 min.) – Deleted scenes for the episodes 'The Young Lords' (13 min.) and 'The Living Legend' (12 min.).
