About this deal

I went to the homes of some of their descendants and met some very elderly ladies in their late eighties and nineties who still speak Gaelic. They spoke of their pride in their roots, and in the fortitude of their ancestors who had survived and thrived against all the odds. Peter said: “Thirty years into the future is not really very far. Thirty years ago I would have just started filming the Gaelic drama series Machair and that feels like yesterday to me.

In A Silent Death I wanted to create a character who went against the grain of the classic hero. Not in the sense that he would be a drunk or a junkie or imbued with unpleasant characteristics or a questionable morality. But someone who was too damned clever for his own good.It was a difficult journey for those men, carrying the bodies of their loved ones across the island, at the mercy of the elements. But it was a necessity, a practicality, a fact of life – or death – for those folk who carved out their existence on the island. This week the final book in the Lewis Trilogy hits the streets of Norway and the expectations are high that it will follow the success of the first two books. The Norwegians are really taking the trilogy to their hearts. Confined to France and a 40 km radius from our home, I had to come up with a new idea, and so The Night Gate was conceived. A new adventure for Enzo Macleod, it has two timelines, one present day and one during the second world war, mainly set in and around Carennac and Saint-Céré, and other places I know well in France. One scene even takes place in the apartment above the garage which is now my music studio where, in reality during the war, many works of art from the Louvre were hidden from the Nazis! Peter May has created three different series and, along with other standalone novels, has written over 25 novels. Apart from being based in the Oriental land of China, the China Thriller series starts with an interesting take on murder mysteries by adding a hint of romance.

I am not often moved to blog about things I read in the tabloid press, but I was incensed by this ignorant, poorly researched piece of trash “journalism” perpetrated by a pompous columnist called Richard Godwin in a rag called the London Evening Standard. Of course, Enzo could not say no to the thrill and rush of solving a case and getting to use his skills and the modern pieces of equipment. Enzo finds Gaillard, but not wholly. He found a skull that belonged to Gaillard. But some clues lead him to a deeper investigation. But how do you write about a subject so big and I’m a crime writer and readers don’t want to be preached at and I was well aware of all that. It is with great sadness today that I have to record the passing of my friend and mentor Dr. Richard Ward. So, for example, climate-wise in this Peter May future, Scotland’s summers would be colder and wetter with freezing winters with more snow and ice storms.

In July, there was another virtual event. The British Crime Writer’s Association awards ceremony for 2021. But before I tell you about the highlights of the year for me, I have some exciting news about my next book Entry Island. For those of you who don’t know, Entry Island is set in part on the Isle of Lewis and in part on the Magdalen Islands of Quebec. It was scheduled for release in early January 2014, but… ENTRY ISLAND RELEASED EARLYI’ve been writing all my life and for the last 10 to 20 years, I’ve just been writing a book a year or more and travelling for promotion all over the world and it is exhausting. It was getting too much.”
