I wouldn't recommend the general horror fan to pay the crazy online prices for this, but anyone into the James Herbert/Guy N. Smith/Shaun Hutson-style critter novels, as well as those into the whole "trapped and hunted" theme, could certainly do worse than The Nest. Times, Los Angeles (24 March 2016). An entrepreneur and his family begin to unravel after moving into an old country manor in England in the 1980s. If you like your novels complex with characters possessing major flaws that they cannot overcome, this is a book you will probably like. Otherwise, the constant churn may turn you off. Okay, so this isn't the "great American novel" but what it is is a lot of gross out laughter and chills, and a few hours of mindless entertainment. In these political times, who couldn't use that? I would have given this three stars based on the writing alone, but I added a half star and rounded it up to 4 total, because of the FUN factor!

Like characters in a Nancy Meyers or Richard Curtis film, they are vivid, animated and ultimately anodyne. Their grins are wry, their laughs are self-deprecating and their every other action seems perfectly matched to the conventions of people in books and movies. Typically, I find flowery writing to be very off-putting, an attempt at poetry that comes off as pretension. The Nest definitely has that vibe, but something about reading horrible, gory deaths written in such an artsy way had me rolling on the floor. It often feels like the author is parodying high-brow literature, so I get the impression that Mr. Douglas knew what he was doing here.
