About this deal

While I don't see myself using over-ear headphones for anything else than listenting to music, other people like to be able to use such a headphone for calls as well.

Not sure what to do, I called an expert on headphones, and he mentioned these Sony's. In fact he said these are what he used personally. I just received them, and my search is over! They sound better than all the others I tried, even with the amplifier on the others. No amp needed for Sony's, lightweight to the point I don't notice they are even on my head. Low enough impedance I'm only slightly over half maximum volume on the IPAD. While it is all too common to see some manufacturers boost the treble for the psychoacoustic illusion of more details, the MDR-1AM2 is a specialist in bringing forth such detail of recordings while maintaining a pleasing tonality. However, the MDR-1AM2 does not keep up in the resolution department. As detailed as it sounds, these perceived details in different components of the mix are not as well-articulated and well-separated as I'd like them to be. Possibly due to the fact that the lower treble is slightly recessed, the presence of instruments and vocals are set a distance away from the listener. Combined with its airy treble, this helps give the perception of a spacious sound although the soundstage is neither particularly wide nor deep. This is why I enjoy using the MDR-1AM2 for live performances as well. More comfortble to wear, a light and detachable cable. Frequency range is so much broader while requiring a fraction of the ohms (16 vs 63) so no need for amp boosting. The whole entire front baffle comes right off from the earcup cavity. Carefully lift the front baffle out. Careful not to yank and snap the internal wiring. The waveform of the impulse response depends on the Sony MDR-1AM2 frequency response and the damped resonances and reverberations and the reverberation in the stand chamber. The visual clarity of the parameters on the impulse response is very low. Visual determination of quality by impulse response was actual in "pre-computer" years. First off, just note that do this at your own risk. If you've modded before, this is a pretty simple mod and requires no soldering. Just don't accidentally poke the drivers nor pull the internal wiring too much.

The frequency response in RAA is obtained through the reproduction and analysis of a special noise signal with the subsequent generation of an impulse response. The frequency response plot is constructed from the spectrum of the impulse response.During the measurements, a special amplifier was used with zero total output impedance over the entire frequency range, which required /amp_comp.php>no compensation for the amplitude response F.A.Q.. The microphone is calibrated to 45 kHz F.A.Q. with an appropriate frequency response correction. Comfort and weight are perhaps the biggest selling points of this headphone. Sure, those specs are impressive, but they only get more impressive when you actually hold this headphone in your hands and realize just how incredibly light it is. You could wear this baby all day and never feel a thing. First, this headphone is crazy sensitive. I have had many portable headphones and none are this sensitive. It almost behaves like an IEM in this regard --- on an iPhone I actually volume match it with my DD IEM and find the volume to be sufficient. On most desktop amps it will hiss. Again something that's much more common with IEMs than full-sized headphones.

I personally can't complain for the 100euros I paid, but I don't know if I would pay more than that.

The headphones sound amazing especially after burn-in. They're great for listening to music and surround content (plugged into your AV receiver) late nights without affecting your neighbors. Deep lows, clear mids, clean highs. They're the best sounding headphones I've owned. Sony rarely disappoints when it comes to the bass of its headphones. Both the MV1 and 1AM2 have a decent level of detail and power that aims for an engrossing but natural display of low-end frequency content. The bloom of the 1AM2 is quite larger than the MV1, but the MV1 still supplies some rich frequency content in its lows. Those frequencies arrive a bit slower though compared to the 1AM2. If you don’t like the bass as centered and hard-hitting when making decisions for your mix, then you might prefer the MV1 here. Those who want more of an edge to their bass timbre will probably want the 1AM2. Mids If you are after a specific type of sound or "soundstage" or whatever other buzzwords are popular with self professed Audiophiles, stay away from these unless you are serious about tweaking your EQ settings and being exposed to some hard truths. If you are one of these lazy "experts" that demnds more bass, or midrange, or sense of space or whatever... you're really just describing a closed range of frequency responses and effects that you prefer. The MDR1AM2 does not cater to you... they will expose the flaws in some of the music you like so much in terms of mixing and mastering that you thought were great with other headphones that "boosted" the bass/treble/etc.. Boosting = Fake/Inaccurate/Unbalanced sound. According to the frequency response curve, it is possible to calculate the width of the frequency range .

The graph shows the change in the perception of the frequency response of the headphones when listening to music with a different loudness relative to the natural level. When listening to headphones at a low volume, the perception of recoil in the low frequency range decreases, and when you listen to it at a high volume, it increases. I have also tried it with both recordings in uncompressed 24 bit, 96khz WAV file form and 24 bit 44khz VST instruments (EastWest Hollywood Opus to be specific). The over-the-ear design is too tight for my liking. With my Sennheisers (598 SE), I could forget I was wearing them. I can't with the MDR1AM2s. I find myself frequently adjusting the left can for proper fit. Nipponjin must have small ears compared to Germans. The result is a ever-so-slightly warm-ish neutral sound that is smooth up top. Very pleasing now though I do miss a bit of the bass impact and sense of "dynamism". I may try to experiment some more at a later time.

Listening to the MDR-1AM2, I found that it appears to have a bit of a split personality. At typical or regular listening volumes, the MDR-1AM2 has a rather pleasing signature with strong, punchy bass; present and smooth mids; and a slightly pronounced but still bearable treble. However, at higher volumes, the MDR-1AM2 takes on a considerably harsher sound and becomes shouty and strained. At higher volumes, its upper mids and treble becomes piercing and has an artificial, shimmering quality about it. Take note of this and be sure to try listening to the MDR-1AM2 at various listening levels when auditioning it. Sporting a similar design naturally translates that the MDR-1AM2 would, like its predecessor feature a 40mm driver, however, the 40mm HD driver on the MDR-1AM2 is not the same one found on its predecessor but a newly developed one with an aluminium-coated liquid crystal polymer diaphragm, supporting a full range response from 3 Hz to 100 kHz similar to that of the MDR-1A. In terms of sharing some of the DNA from the MDR-Z1R, the MDR-1AM2 adopted the Fibonacci patterned grill from the signature series headphone, which was inspired by the Fibonacci sequence in nature, its equalised opening ensure minimal sound colouration and faithful reproduction of Hi-Res Audio sources. Ears also tend to get hot after listening to it for prolonged periods of time. For the MSRP they ask on it, I really expected a lot more have to be honest. The frequency response in RAA is obtained through the reproduction and analysis of a special noise signal with the subsequent generation of an impulse response.
