About this deal

Set against a backdrop of a looming invasion no one wants to believe will actually happen, the book follows a reluctant spy and his young helpers as they try to find out what the menacing Wasp army is going to do and stop them before it’s too late.

Tisamon eventually beats her but she gave him a challenge no-one had for years and he acknowledges her. Also, what's with creating steampunk-ish multi-legged automobiles rather than ones with, I don't know? With the city quickly falling Stenwold and his Ant-kinden friend Marius are joined by Tisamon, a Mantis-kinden and the last member of their group, and they fall back to Myna's highest airfield, their retreat shielded by a squad of Ant-kinden soldiers led by Marius. All these concepts are thrown at the reader right at the start, so it can be difficult at first to get into the flow of the novel. Att första boken i en serie av denna magnitud kan upplevas som segstartad är ingenting konstigt eller ovanligt.

I’m really lucky that I can remember so many summer family holidays lying on a sun lounger somewhere in Spain reading Dragonlance or Paolini’s Eragon (2003) or Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom (1995 – 2003) trilogy.Having just ended a period of forced fantasy abstinence due to other factors, I found Adrian Tchaikovsky’s debut novel a refreshing change from the sword-and-sorcery I usually find myself reading. The city states of the Lowlands have lived in peace for decades, bastions of civilization, prosperity and sophistication, protected by treaties, trade and a belief in the reasonable nature of their neighbors.

There was lots to like including Tchaikovsky’s vision of a post-Industrial Revolution-style of fantasy fiction, his central kinden idea and the simmering race conflict that he manages to embed into his cast of characters. Overall this is a very well balanced, intelligent novel that is different enough to be new and fresh and very rewarding. If all I had to go by was the cover art (Tor 2008 edition), the title of the book and the synopsis, I probably wouldn’t give Adrian Tchaikovsky’s debut a second glimpse.

Stenwold tells him that Atryssa never betrayed them at Myna, but was discovered by Wasp agents and forced to flee.
