About this deal

The GSI MicroLite 1000 Twist Water Bottle is a vacuum insulated stainless steel flask that has a one litre capacity but impressively small size and density. It is extremely lightweight at 0.37kg which is less than half the weight of the Stanley 18-8 for the same capacity. Need to know: Not dishwasher safe, button-operated lid, comes with one cup, also available in 350ml and 500ml sizes The downside of this approach is that a high capacity flask will be big and bulky. There’s no getting away from it. However, if you’re able to split your gear equally between all members of the team (e.g. one walker carries lunch, another carries the picnic blanket etc) then overall you will use less space than if you each carried smaller flasks. Key attributes: Very light, design enables one-handed drinking, wide mouth for easy filling and cleaning.

If you’re after a large flask, the Oneisall 2L is a great stainless steel option with a lovely ergonomic design. This is a high-quality two litre flask which is capable of serving drinks for the whole family – great to bring along for day trips in the car or campervan. You may think choosing a vacuum flask is a simple matter of grabbing the shiniest example in the camping shop (if it’s open!) and hoping for the best. Well, unfortunately we’ve tried that approach several times and have frequently been disappointed.

To get maximum performance from your flask, you should always pre-warm it before use. Fill it with boiling water and leave to stand for five minutes or so before emptying and refilling with your chosen brew – such as tea, coffee, soup or hot chocolate. Filling your flask right to the top will also help minimise heat loss. Temperature Test: Method Slurping soup is great fun from the Milu – in fact, we’ve started using it at home because it keeps your minestrone piping hot, unlike a cold china bowl from the cupboard. The 18-8 flask is from the renowned brand Stanley. Stanley has been serving people since 1913 and this model is truly legendary. No other brand apart from Thermos themselves can boast such heritage. Dimensions Capacity: 1 litre (33oz) / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 85.5°c, 4 hrs 79.1°c, 6 hrs 74.3°c, 8 hrs 69.9°c, 24 hrs 44.5°c / Made of food grade 18/8 stainless steel that doesn’t impart or retain flavour / Lid doubles as a mug ensuring you always have a cup handy / Silicon sleeve / Drinking stopper opens and closes with a slight turn / Additional standard stopper for optimum heat retention included / Tapered design for easier handling / Large mouth opening is easy to fill and clean. Glass-lined flasks are more dangerous because glass walls can also shatter To be safe, it's best to empty the contents after 24 hours. The two glass-lined flasks we tested were the only flasks to fail our drop test: one shattered on the first drop, the other fell apart on the second. When single-use plastics started getting a bad rap, S’well became the drinks bottle of choice for a host of celebrities and ‘influencers’. But they’re not all style over substance – the design consists of a triple-walled construction incorporating a copper layer for improved insulation. This flask is lightweight and practical – the ergonomic shape makes it easy to hold, the really wide mouth makes for easy drinking, filling and cleaning, and the grooved lid makes it easy to open, even if screwed on tightly. It’s sure to draw admiring glances if you leave it on your desk at the office. It’s just a shame that the capacity is a bit small, and it’s relatively expensive for a little flask. Full Specifications Some thermos flasks use a cork or plug to seal the liquid in, but we really don’t feel this is an effective design. Our suggestion is to go with a screw cap and a clip-on outer cap which will double as a cup. We’ve reviewed a selection of the best thermos flasks, ranging in size from 470ml to a whopping 64oz (1.8 litres). Bigger flasks usually retain heat better than smaller flasks, but are typically bulkier and heavier. We’ve compared their performance with our own temperature test. What Is The Best Thermos Flask?

Nothing beats a hot brew when you’re tramping around the hills on a winter hike. It’s like we’re hard-wired to appreciate that soothing warmth spreading around our bodies like a “Ready Brek” glow. Thermos flasks use an ingenious mechanism which consists of dual layers separated by a vacuum cavity between them. The vacuum is a region of space with no air or anything at all in it – this creates a natural barrier to heat leaving or entering the innermost chamber holding your drink. That’s why liquids in the flask remain hot or cold for longer than they would in a standard plastic bottle. Button-operated lids are more efficient to use than twist-and-pour stoppers – we found the button-operated lids to be more secure than the twist-and-pour stoppers. If you take your thermos flask to the local coffee shop and ask them to fill it up instead of having your drink served in a disposable coffee cup with plastic lid then you will be reducing the amount of landfill and waste material which gets produced from these establishments. Win win in our books! Why ‘Thermos’?

The best thermos flasks can keep liquids hot or cold for a long time – over 12 hours in some cases. Look for a two-layer construction with an intermediate vacuum layer. This prevents heat loss by convection and conduction. Need to know: Not dishwasher safe, twist-off lid, glass and plastic materials, comes with two cups, also available in 1.8-litre size

Avoid abrasive detergents and materials when cleaning your flask – bleach will stain and damage stainless steel, and scouring pads will scratch the outside of your flask Hydro Flask are a fashionable US company who have made reusable flasks and water bottles immensely cool over on the West Coast of America. The Hydro Flask Wide Mouth is a quality vacuum flask employing some great tech, a lovely powder-coated exterior surface for great grip as well as excellent heat retention properties. The downside is that they are a touch on the expensive side – you don’t get this sort of style for free girl!

Camelbak Hot Cap 20oz

The temperature performance of the Smardy is quite praiseworthy. It gives around 12 hours for hot drinks and 24 hours for cold drinks. Certainly good enough for day trips in any conditions.
