About this deal

Middle-grade readers who love a bit of action, adventure, mystery, and a few scary moments grab a copy of this book.

Of course, no cast of a thrilling adventure isn't complete without the villains of the story and oh,boy, the bad guys of this tale were certainly sinister and creepy and not just a sandwich but a whole hamper short of a picnic. For me, Jennifer Killick is the best there is at writing genuinely tense and scary horror, but with the knowledge that things are never going to go too far (though there were some points in this book where I was crossing my fingers and hoping the thing I was worried might happen, wouldn't actually happen! When four classmates are given detention on a Saturday morning, they thought their day couldn’t get any worse. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I love the animals (the pigs especially), though we all know what happens to animals in horror, right? The creep factor gradually builds into the nightmare these teens must work together to defeat and save one another's lives, and the life of their teacher. Having no choice but to work together to try and stop all this but could there be a reason why this is all happening and why Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira have been made to have detention. I love that from the start I was getting creepy vibes and I wanted to know more of what was happening.

Naira, is the hard-working princess of the group who is under pressure from her mother to do well and excel in life. Despite not knowing each other, the four kids - Angelo, Gustav, Naira and Hallie - work together and as well as scary moments they are so many side-splitting moments which had me giggling for ages afterwards. I enjoyed the set up of the 4 kids, finding out the connection they all had in common other than classmates, because they were not friends.I don't get scared or creeped out when reading books but I have to say what was revealed as the culprit kind of had me creeped out. Check out Jennifer Killick’s assembly video where she shares children’s books she’s enjoyed, where she loves to read, her top tips for enjoying reading and more! I absolutely hate spiders, so I was very tense – much more than a middle-grade book can usually pull out of me. Although I will say it does need a massive “stop here if you are afraid of spiders” trigger warning because they are a big part of the book.

Their working together, even though they didn’t particularly like one another at the start, and their friendship that grows with each passing minute. Find out what may be lurking beneath Dreadwood High in this exciting easy to read book for fans of horror. In my opinion, I feel that this experience made them stronger, and I’m interested to see where their newly formed friendship will take them in book two. I feel that in a Middle Grade Horror you need a few moments of joy to take a break from the sinister story you are reading, and in Dread Wood this was done extremely well. The plot moves at a breakneck pace, but also manages to have believable character based moments too, which do not make the plot lose momentum.

Hallie, Gustav, Naira and Angelo don't usually hang out together at school, let alone on a Saturday.

The glass children for example, another horror book for children, manages to have interesting characters and keeps me, as an older teen, on the edge of my seat. I found the manor on the property to be quite spooky, although I would have really loved to read more about it, have some more descriptions of it, as most of the plot takes place outside or in other buildings. Dread Wood is a YA spooky and creepy story to really make you not want to get a detention at school! The main characters all explore some of the different issues and situations youngsters experience when growing up; they’re very real and relatable.
