About this deal

Of course, Emily gets her man, too - this is romantic fiction - but she cares even more about making her films.

As Maggie enters the world of cutthroat studio execs, high-class nightclubs and beautiful lesbians, she begins reflecting on how her marriage went so wrong. Is her sojourn in the City of Angels a once-in-a-lifetime journey of self-discovery, or is she simply hiding from the one thing she cannot face?We are almost a third of the way through the novel before she begins to explain why her marriage to the equally perfect Garv went wrong, why she has eczema attacks that leave her with a bloody rash, why she is obsessed by an old boyfriend, and why she is so touchy on the subject of children. Angels is a book that will make you laugh, cry, and, most of all, hope against hope for a good outcome for the fabulous Maggie Walsh.

In the end, though, the movie doesn't get made and she gets paid less but doesn't have to see her script get turned into family-friendly pablum. I was enamoured with Keyes usual witty banter, but it wasn't enough to salvage this read past the 2★ stage for me, unfortunately. She is such a wonderful author and can minutely detail the fine points in interpersonal relationships that I find myself almost gasping and thinking, I've thought/felt/said that before!

So when, out of the blue, everything just disintegrated like wet paper, I couldn't shake a wormy suspicion that this was long overdue. Emily is a heavy and high-speed drinker, and has a tendency to nick jewellery and other souvenirs when she is under stress; but she is a woman living her own life and pursuing her own agendas and artistic ambitions, rather than getting over one man and hunting for the next.

The first novel I ever read of hers was Watermelon, a novel about a woman whose husband leaves her the day after she births their first child.

In short time Maggie is drawn into the crazy lifestyles of Los Angeles wannabes, which become great sources of amusing anecdotes. Underneath the perfect eyebrows, Maggie stays the same wholesome, romantic Irish girl, and we know that her prince (not to mention the entire Walsh family with tickets to Disneyland) will come to rescue her in the end.
