About this deal

In 'The Anniversary', a secret party planned for Sybil goes awry when the guest of honour storms out of the hotel. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse.

To mark its 30th anniversary, all 12 episodes of John Cleese and Connie Booth's highly successful comedy series, set in a Torquay hotel, have been remastered. You are going to be able to watch these time after time without any degradation in picture or sound quality and the other main benefit is being able to jump to whatever episode, or indeed scene, that you want — no more forwarding or rewinding tapes. Communication Problems’ sees Basil (Cleese) forced to deal with a deaf guest while attempting to conceal his gambling win from Sybil (Prunella Scales). The Germans' sees Basil failing to cope with a fire drill and the arrival of some German guests while Sybil is in hospital. The Artist Profiles are in two sections: the main characters and the others who starred as guests etc.

If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4.Also included are text biographies of all the leads and the guest stars, a short background featurette on Torquay and the hotel owner who is said to have inspired Basil, a very short blooper reel of out-takes and a brief teaser with Cleese in character entitled Cheap Tatty Review. The Builders’ sees Basil in hot water with Sybil when he employs the unreliable Irish labourer Mr O’Reilly (David Kelly) to do some work in the hotel lobby. The Germans’ sees Basil failing to cope with a fire drill and the arrival of some German guests while Sybil is in hospital – ‘Don’t mention the war – I did once, but I think I got away with it!

Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. Gourmet Night’ sees the Fawltys attempt to throw a cultural evening fail when their chef hits the bottle. In ‘The Anniversary’, a secret party planned for Sybil goes awry when the guest of honour storms out of the hotel. THE KIPPER AND THE CORPSE includes 'The Kipper and the Corpse', 'Gourmet Night', and 'Waldorf Salad'. The box set contains three DVD discs: Series One and Two are on a disc each plus a third disc of Special Features.I suppose I will persevere with it at some stage though and watch the whole twelve episodes with the director commentary on. Fawlty Towers was famously inspired by an unbelievably rude hotel proprietor John Cleese encountered whilst filming with Monty Python. His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode "The Psychiatrist": "You're either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder.

Most of the other episodes follow a pattern, in which Basil is trying to hide some sort of disaster from someone else (his hotel's inadequacy, a drunk chef, racetrack winnings, etc. It is a fair bet that anyone reading this is a fan of the show and probably has the twelve episodes on video cassette, either taped off the telly, or the BBC videos that have been released. The episode also gives Booth a chance to shine when Basil talks Polly into posing as Sybil, which leads to one of the funniest scenes in the whole series. Fawlty Towers" comes in a 3-disc digipak inside a sleeve, with some curious 3D paintings of the hotel. This is done with the normal sound reduced a bit in the background with the director commenting over the top.
